"Coast to Coast" programme on 1010

Post by daveB » 12 Oct 2019 17:27

On 12 Oct 2019 0553 to 0557 on 1010 kHz I received a couple of minutes of clear audio which ended with closing credits identifying it as the "Coast to Coast" radio programme. According to the web it is a programme mainly dealing with the paranormal and conspiracy theories and is carried by over 570 stations in the U.S. After that it became a mixture of North American English, two or three stations fading in and out with each other.

Was it WINS 1010? I tried accessing WINS 1010 programme schedule and got the message "This site isn't currently available in the EU" ! An alternative site indicates WINS is a pure news program. Plus previous times I've got WINS it's news only.

Does anyone have any idea as to whether it was WINS? If not, who it might be. Would a Canadian station carry a syndicated U.S. programme.

Generally the early hours of the morning seemed quite good for transatlantic, lots of carriers at 10 kHz intervals, quite a few with understandable audio, but fading out at the wrong time, and few positive ids made. Those I've identified so far are:

0590 VOCM - but only because I'm now used to hearing "this is VOCM"
0710 WOR - callsign id
0770 CKAC - clear french speaking station
0870 WWL - clear callsign id
plus
1120 likely to be KMOX St Louis
1250 likely to be WGHB
1540 two weak stations - one male speaker, the other female
1560 most like WFME Family Radio

That would be CFRB from Canada. They also ID as newstalk 1010 Toronto.

They broadcast coast to coast. In mid winter I have driven into work listening to it on my car radio!

The Canadese are mostly not telling their sign but only identify as "Newstalk ten ten" (while New York says "Ten Ten Wins", number first, name last.) But I have two recordings of my own when identifying as "on the Bell Talk Radio network". Bell belongs to the Canadian divison of I heart (US), however, Bell is still used on air. I have never observed the "coast to coast" ID (which is more typical for the US) but as it is a clear channel, it can only be them. and yes, the Coast to Coast programme is on their webspace:

NewsTalk and Wins are the only ones who would reach europe usually and it is common that both are fading in at the same time with overlay effect as a result. by the way the NewsTalk 1010 traffic jingle melody (in as well as out signature) is quite remarkable and cannot be missed even when signal is weak. I had never anything else on this frequency except both of them

btw. NewsTalk 1010 is also on 6070 kHz shortwave, yet...still...
