What have you found on 1008, now Flevoland has gone?

Post by John Faulkner, Skegness » 09 Jan 2019 10:30

Since Holland has left 1008, I hear something Arabic in the late afternoons/evenings. Probably Egypt or Iran.

Yesterday, I heard CNR1 from China. probably from the Kunming transmitter.

No Greece so far.

What are YOU hearing?

Thanks Klaus.

I haven't heard Pakistan or Greece on 1008. I will look for Pakistan this afternoon. They have a very distinctive synthetic brass-stab news jingle and three rather primitive sounding time pips on the hour. https://www.youtube.com/edit?o=U&video_id=nHQCNTZignI

Cadena SER Radio Badajoz, Extremadura district is audible from early afternoon.
During the evening hours, I hear a second station of the same content with echo.
However, I cannot identify this SER outlet to be either Girona or Alicante unsure.

Iran in Farsi language and Egypt in Arabic have been barely audible as dx signals.
no trace of Greece found back so far in Northern Germany, would like to qsl this.

Thanks P-FM. Spain is here right now (Almost 1am local time) on a high offset of 0123.

But here's what I recorded at 16:00:

https://app.box.com/s/pz6v6owvfjzq42pesopjtu4pik96van8

Chariots Of Fire song extract, part of a national anthem, but an unidentified language. I'll bet this is either Egypt or Iran as it sounds Arabic-ish, but the national anthem doesn't tie up to any anthem I have found on YouTube.

Unable to compare right now due to lack of audio, but as 1008 Egypt is about to relay Voice of Palestine, did you try the NA of Palestine called Fida'i ?

Iraq is also believed to use that certain frequency, what about their NA called Mawtini ?

No doubt it's Arabic and the time signal is distinctively Egyptian. The distorted modulation also fits to Egypt. The piece of march music isn't necessarily a national anthem. Egyptian and other Arab stations often use pieces of martial music as news openers.

Thank you Matthias. You are not the only person who has advised that this is Egypt. Still, a nice new catch.

Spain - Cadena SER, maybe the Extremadura relay but I have not ID'ed it yet.

Spain also on 621 kHz for me, RNE. Maybe a good chance now to get the Canarias relay although upto now it would most likely be from mainland Spain.

This is all indoors, when on my next DXpedition I will try to setup my SDR to hear if anything else apart from Spain can be received at my location.

Yesterday, at about 17:30 CET, I've heard for the very first time Greece with a good signal, not very strong but nicely QRM free (anyway I suppose that they are operating on less than the 50 Kw reported on MWlist).
Later, at 20:45 CET, there was two different signals from SER with a slight echo and nothing at all from Greece .
Rxs: Degen DE-1103, Sangean ATS-909, and the newcomer Tecsun PL-398 MP

Hello, Canarias was heard during night New Years Eve - New Years Day with local broadcast in Germany!

Indeed, 2 or even 3 RNEs / SERs currently on 621 and 1008 (no Greece here so it might be 5-10 kW)

try 621 with Tiraspol in the early morning hours weekedays. the music is definitely worth it

Can anyone else in Norwich/Norfolk (or anywhere else) hear an awful racket on this frequency? It's not constant but sounds like some sort of whiny test tone instead of local interference - I've heard the same noise at 2 locations about 4 miles apart. There seems to be speech buried in the noise - the speech stops at the same time as the noise.

Nothing like that noted here.

1008 has a little noise. This affects the middle of my MW band, so anything very weak would not be heard.

During the last two nights, I have heard " ΕΡΤ ΚΕΡΚΥΡΑ " via the ERT local radio network on 1008 kHz from Kerkira-Corfu with the night musical programme of 1st Programme "ελληνικη ραδιοφωνια πρωτο προγραμμα 91,6 & 105,8" and news bulletin "δικτυο ελληνικη ραδιοφωνια" at full hour. Weak signal but 100 % = 729 kHz from Athinai-Athens with a little delay.

Three days ago, it was VIRI IRIB "Radio Semnan 94 MHz 1008 kHz" mixing with Egypt, who is dominating this frequency towards South and South-East. Onto the other direction, I have at least Extremadura and Girona, but I suppose Alicante is also there, although I could not hear it out of the echoe given by the different SER channels running not in sync.

After 1 o'clock, there are "In-depth Radio NEWSTALK 10-10" (sometimes while syndicated shows IDing as "on the Bell Radio Network") and "10-10 WINS" (operated by Entercom and belonging to CBS Radio) mixing. Both have confirmed by digital mail. However, these stations can only be heard during good TA conditions.

Nice catches PFM.

Following the recent geo-disturbance, I recorded MW yesterday afternoon, 1008 had China at 1700 and 1800. This may be Kunming. I hear the Beijing time check too.

No other far east Asiatic countries have been audible. I even heard the Chinese time pips on 1566 instead of South Korea. That will be an interesting one as only Zhangjiakou and Jingmen are listed with any real power. i.e. 10 kW. There are no Scandinavian loggings of Chinese stations on 1566 either.

Asia is poor here for weeks now, it is almost 2 months. Last good log was at the end of November, I cannot even remember.
Apart from the one very good Japanese noon on Dec. 22nd and 918 kHz with the Chinese on 25th / 26th Dec.

Whenever I try, there is not a single trace on 972 / 1098 / 1134 / 1143 / 1557 / 1566 /...
Dont know why is that. No Far East signal received in GER; not even during the nights when US was good.

(thought it might be a possibility to receive Far East from Western direction instead of pointing east...)

It's a weird one PFM. It's exactly the same here too.

September and October have always been the best months for Asia here. You would expect things to stay put throughout the winter. There's still a darkness path after all. So why does this happen?

I could do with running out a Beverage to Asia as I used to, but I cannot be bothered. It's too cold too.

I have been observing this frequency during the nights of 12 and 13 Feb.
I hear that too. It is very unstable but I can also see this as a strong carrier giving up to 6 bars on the vu-meter of my ATS-909 W.
The ATS-909X does not even show it.

ERT was there in the back =729 kHz but had very hard times fighting against this terrible beep.

First I thought it was due to different channel range, but the noise was even there before 23 UTC, when there was no US signal upon 1010 kHz
