1611 kHz UK Free Radio Station

Post by satnipper » 08 Dec 2018 09:42

There is a UK free radio station on 1611 kHz which has a weak signal at my western coastal scouselands QTH. Last night it was playing non-stop pop/oldies and this morning it is playing old Radio Fax tapes announcing 6205 kHz.

Anyone else getting this?

Thanks

Stuart

Yes. A couple of days ago, Chrisopher Ratzer in Austria (who I believe has posted on here) put a log on mwlist of a Philippines station on 1611.

As nothing much was happening I checked my recordings and could hear something about the right time, but it soon became obvious it wasn't the Philippines. I was beginning to wonder about Norway. I checked before going to bed last night and the noise was too great, but I see it pops up at various times overnight.

Extremely weak here in Cardiff, gone before sunrise and I haven't picked out any speech.

It's not Norway's Northern Star - not // to their stream and it's still audible now. I've done some DF readings and the path indicates Northern Ireland or the East Midlands. I'm inclined to say it's from NI as I can see the carrier on the Lytham St Anne's kiwi sdr but not on Midland SDRs.

We had a pirate on 1611 kHz here in London back in about 1990, the recording that I made is about 90 minutes long.
It was a station called Swinging Radio England and they used some of the same jingles from the 1966 offshore station of the same name - it doesn't quite sound like the music format that I remember on the original SRE in 1966. :D

It was a good signal here in N London and at night they got reports from main land Europe - on the start of the recording, they claimed to be using 2 kW.

If you don't want to download the file, just click the little search icon and the player should pop up. https://we.tl/t-ZP4ASE3lLP

Edit: Sorry but I didn't realise that the player only plays 15 minutes of audio, if you want the full programme you will have to download it.

Very interesting recording with a lot of old British music! MW pirates are still exits in GB? Or they are only on FM?

One or two still exist. Radio Britannia is currently reported on 1476 kHz.
