I wonder if anybody has this one on their recordings this evening? It doesn't sound like North Korea. I was wondering if it might be Tajikistan?

Re: 819 unid mixing with Egypt
Hello John (and also Jon),
Even though Tajik and Farsi sound the same to most ears I'll go with the distinctively formal presentation style of Iran on this one, including the Chopin-style piano interludes they seem to like on all Persian stations. And mention of "Iran" at 0min07 and at 2min43. Possible mention of "Abadan" at 0min53.
Iran turns up on the frequency most evenings even on a portable but it's a mystery why, on a non-directional or not very directional aerial, sometimes it's not there and sometimes you can barely hear Egypt underneath its signal. It's a pleasant dream to think that one day we might be able to examine ion concentrations at the precise regions of reflection.

Hint: DPRK (North Korea) does now give any ID with time signal at the top of the hour as the South does, since switching back from their un-even time zone (it's again +8 hours UK time). While IROI is stil at half an hour (+3,5 UK time) and does ID themself at :30 with a very special gong interval signal.
The most obvious signal on 819 in Europe is indeed Egypt, while Iran can be audible in the background. I experienced, Iran is sometimes there, if so, it is very weak, and sometimes it's vanished completely. Remember, their transmitters are old and give a bad audio quality on some frequencies with drop-outs and drifting offsets. North Korea is stable and loud with beautiful slow instrumental music until their switch-off at night, it can be caught with a bit of an effort, but it depends very much upon the propagation conditions. If they are good, DPRK can be present for hours, always fading in and out. This is a very unique fading sound with a lot of noise provided by the transmitter.
Good luck during your hunt, I am hoping to hear KCBS back again this winter, myself.

Re: 819 unid mixing with Egypt
Thank you BS, Tim and PFM!
Also my apologies for the late reply. I have been away for a few days. (Suffolk coast, camping! Did I play radio? Unfortunately not.
I'll add a few notes about that in a more appropriate thread.)
Iran was always going to be the probability. I forget they have their time signal on the half hour. But so do North Korea. NK has quite a more distinctive.
Will be checking more half hours now as it could be interesting hunting for obscure Iranians when the Far East is poor.

OK. Thanks. The blow-out will kill things off for a day or two yet, but there is a nice quiet solar face rotating into view, so fingers crossed for better conditions soon.
