German tropo 17 May 2018

Post by daveB » 17 May 2018 20:02

Not quite as exciting as the early hours of the morning - but Brocken, Torfhaus and Inselberg from Central Germany are coming in at RDS levels. That is 675-680 km on a bearing of 82 degrees. I'm hoping, that as dusk falls, conditions will improve.
SDRPlay, AirSpyMini, RTL dongles, SB920s, Yamaha TX930. 5 ele compact yagi on rotator at 18ft agl. FM5 facing east, FM5 facing south, FM3 facing NE, OIRT dipole, 3-ele Moxon vertical facing east.

A few Germans trying to build here, but nowhere near as good as yesterday evening's tropo when several Danish and German transmitters came up to good RDS levels. I was not aware of any Swedish DX, but I mostly concentrated on vertical, looking for Norway.

My free time for DXing is extremely limited at the moment.

Incidentally, the previous evening (or was it two evening's ago?) I had a MONUMETALLY STRONG short range enhancement from Tacolneston, which peaked well above what the FDM-S2 can display on it's readout. There was intermod. at the bottom of the band. I have never known this kind of overload on the FDM-S2 before.

try out the Sachsen-Anhalt / Thueringen area (Magdeburg, Brocken, Inselsberg...) now.

got a crystal-clear Radio SAW on 100.1 right now next to local RSH 100.2 at the moment plus DAB from Thuringen is coming through as well

I was about to post that there is no tropo here but have just come across classical music on 87.9 beaming east with aircraft scatter effects. I suspect it might be MDR Kultur from Inselberg.
Good DX.

Last night, I have heard HR1 from Heidelstein/Rhön (located next to the border with Franconia) here on 104.8 MHz instead of my local Ostseewelle ("Baltic Sea Waves") near the Baltic Sea. This is 380 km for 40 kW across Harz :o
