early Polish tv 1936-37 from Lwów

Post by Tim Bucknall » 05 Oct 2016 18:51

Dear all,
during my warsaw visit I picked up their local radio magazine radio world (Swiat Radio)

for the September issue they covered the History of Ham Radio & broadcasting in Lwów before 1939
the Lwów hams operated on 430mhz and the old 56mhz band and were pretty ahead of their time, they were heavily into dxpeditions to the carpathians where there was lots of room for aerials

all members of the Amateur Radio community were arrested and mostly shot dead after the Soviet Invasion of 17th Sept 1939
the happy ending of sorts is that the remaining Poles resurrected the club in 1987 and its now going strong

but for me the highlight of the Article was details of the first TV service from Lwów which used the Baird mechanical system rejected by the BBC ,

testing started in 1936 and regular px began January 1937 and ran until the destruction of the 2nd Polish republic in 1939

Range of the broadcasts was 160km

this was totally new info to me I had no idea there was TV in "the Kresy" before WW2

Lwów not Warsaw was chosen for TV broadcasting because it had the highest concentration of radio owners/listeners anywhere in Poland
Polskie Radio Lwów was very popular across all of Poland as it had the best comedy shows, the best singers etc

by coincidence there is a memorial concert in Coldharbour, Surrey this month in memory of one such Lwów radio star who lived in postwar exile in the UK.

Fascinating. I wonder what was on 70cm back then other than the Polish amateurs.
