new ignition type interference appeared on VHF/UHF this weekend
the SDR in particular really cannot handle it, so if the qrn doesn't go, I will be limited to very strong e skip at home on the Icom 9500 and will have to go mobile for everything else
the 9500's noise blanker will switch on in fm mode but has no effect
should have new mobile set up by the end of the week but that's for another thread,

Re: new qrn source
It's the same here Tim. Had some fairly strong noise wipe out the FM band here this morning. I could only hear Belmont and Tacolneston easily. Peterborough had some noise. It's beginning to weaken now.
Different days bring different levels of interference and from different sources. I am relieved that none have been long-lasting so far.
Medium wave is worse, but a choke is keeping things quiet for now.
Have you ever driven around a town and heard how much MW and band 2 interference there is these days? My home location happens to be in one of the electrically quietest parts of town - and it ain't always that quiet.

JF - yes I have and it's scary.
Any minute our personal hobby could be wiped out by a cheap Chinese piece of crap power supply or BT's VDSL.

Re: new qrn source
Speaking of things being suddenly wiped out, I notice there is a lot of lightning strikes in the English Midlands this afternoon, and I went searching for real-time sferics maps.
http://www.lightningmaps.org/ is new on me: The delay time is less than 1.5 sec.
I have selected to have sound enabled so it clicks with each strike, and you can select to show the thunder sound-front displayed: zoomed to close-in you see how the thunder is heard in the surrounding area
You only get clicks for the displayed area, so you can zoom to your locality and leave it running, then if you hear clicks you know it must be getting close
