UNID with English? discussion 93.1 - solved

Post by Nick Gilly »

Any ideas on this one please? It's only very brief and sounds like a guy with a Scottish accent in mid discussion, which quickly gets replaced by Radio Margherita from Sicily:

Sicily and Malta were coming in at around this time, but there's no obvious candidates for English language programming on 93.1. This was NOT BBC Radio 4. Who would this be coming in from the direction of Sicily & Malta?

Thanks.
Good DX.

Thanks Dave. I've had a listen to BBC Radio Scotland's programme that was on at the time:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000kfpp

There's a bit of chat between the presenter and the next guy on around 1h 44-45 min, but it doesn't quite match the time of reception, and it also sounds different, with a more echoey sound on my clip, and it sounds like a different guy talking. In fact, listening again, I'm not even sure the guy talking on my clip is even in English, apart from an 'er so, yeah' at 12-13 secs in. The bit before sounds vaguely Celtic perhaps.

What do others think? I'm a bit baffled, to be honest.

Margherita which was also received (ID at 54 sec.) is at 139 or 140 degrees.
the scottish part might be the original ton of an musician taken from an interview.
or maybe it is some off-shore history stuff from the past or remembering the good old days.
does Studio 98 ( http://www.radiostudio-98.com/ ) air such content? it is also at 139°
this seems to be the only local radio station within the opening angle that might fit.

@Franco what do you think? this station calls itself legendary and mentions Radio Caroline.

Nick it reminds me of when I heard Tears For Fears being interviewed on RAI Radio 2. They were speaking Italian but threw in a few English words as well.

Thanks for the RAI Radio 2 suggestion.

Again, I have found the programme that would have been on at this time on July 1st (8.47 pm CET):

https://www.raiplayradio.it/audio/2020/ ... bf7d5.html

Going to the approximate place in the show it is in the middle of an Italian pop song, with the DJ speaking afterwards, in Italian.

So, it isn't them either. The mystery continues.

Hello.

Try BBC Radio Cymru from transmitter Blaenplwyf, his power is 250 kW.

Now why didn't I think of that? Thanks very much. This is indeed a match:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m000kgh6

It's around 46 minutes into that audio. So it is indeed BBC Radio Cymru from Blaenplwyf, presumably being heard off the back of the aerial via aircraft scatter. I have amended the log.

No wonder I was a bit confused. They are speaking Welsh with a few English words & phrases mixed in.
