A couple of unlisted Algerians - any ideas please?

Post by Nick Gilly » 22 Jul 2018 20:31

During the Algerian opening this afternoon propagation was going quite a long way inland with Ouargla being logged here on 92.1, 95.3 and 98.6, a site in the Sahara Desert. Around this time I also had Chaîne 3 on 95.3, with a TOTH ID, and also Chaîne 2 on 89.2, strong but with no RDS. I don't know if these are both from the same site, but Chaîne 3 on 95.3 was also battling it out with Chaîne 2 from Ouargla. Ouargla was in for maybe 40 minutes at least here.

Neither of these are listed on either FMLIST or Paul & Mike's ukdx North African database. Does anyone know where they are located? They aren't usual Algerians here.
Good DX.

hmmm....Ouargla seems to run on low power?! it is area "30", about 800 k or 1000 miles south to Algier.

95.3 is listed as planned for Safsaf El Ouesra, right next to the border with Tunesia in Tbessa province. seems to carry Chaine 3 today.
92.1 is also listed as planned for Safsaf, also is 98,6 MHz !!

so are you sure about having received those ones:

92.1 ALG 30 Ouargla 5°15'04E/ 31°56'19N Radio Ouargla / Ch1. 270 7 kW
95.3 ALG 30 Ouargla 5°15'04E/ 31°56'19N Chaîne 2 270 7 kW
98.6 ALG 30 Ouargla 5°15'04E/ 31°56'19N Chaîne 1 270 7 kW

?? maybe it was rather them:

92.1 ALG Safsaf El Ouesra 8°12'24E/ 34°57'24N 1.4 p h D
95.3 ALG Safsaf El Ouesra 8°12'24E/ 34°57'24N 1.4 p h D
98.6 ALG Safsaf El Ouesra 8°12'24E/ 34°57'24N 1.4 p h D

as none of the px is listed there. so maybe Ouargla now carries Chaine 3 on 95.3 and Chaine 2 went to 89.2 MHz while new Safsaf has Chaine 3 on 95.3

I think that new tx. is a good point to start with.

Thanks PFM907.

I'm certain that I received Ouargla, as 92.1 was Radio Ouargla, as their web stream, and I have a recording of an ID, and of course it was in at the same time as 98.6. So the Chaîne 2 relay I had on 95.3 would also have been Ouargla. Chaîne 2 on 89.2 and Chaîne 3 on 95.3 were only in for a few minutes each, a much shorter length of time than the reception from Ouargla.

Tunisia was coming in as the opening started but, by the time the more distant Algerians were coming in, Tunisia had gone. So it could be the new tx, but I'm not convinced that conditions were favouring that part of Algeria.
Good DX.

95.3 with Chaine 3 from Safsaf would be an option but as you already mentioned, no 89.2 is listed in ALG for Chaine 2 in kabyle / berber language. however, this is in a pretty remote area from your QTH and does not quite seem to fit that days angle / direction

unfortunately, the most recent official document is eight years old:
https://www.tda.dz/sites/default/files/ ... 6-2010.pdf

according to the listings, 89.2 is only used by Chaine 3... strange.
