Today's UNIDs from Israel and the Middle East

Post by John Faulkner, Skegness » 23 Jul 2017 17:19

This morning saw a superb band-wide opening to Israel, with many unidentified stations. Most of them can probably be 'presumed' by virtue of the fact that they nearly all tie in with transmitter sites at Beer Sheva and Jerusalem. In fact, between 0900 and 0910, it started to look like I was doing a bandscan from these two Israeli cities!

It started with KAN 88 on 87.6 shortly after 0900: https://youtu.be/HXvPgK0xLn0

Not long after this I spotted several other Israeli stations, the strongest of which was KAN 88 from Beer Sheva on 88.5: https://youtu.be/od4NUl_hCds

Signals then began to shoot to the top of the band. I presume this is Israel on 105.1: https://youtu.be/JZUT3j70JYs

105.1 was in parallel with 97.8: https://youtu.be/Y6fFm5Wv3Go

Then things got even more interesting. An Arabic station appeared on 88.7: https://youtu.be/HQwMdBlw0Xg

Then another Arabic was noted on 88.2 with Quranic prayer: https://youtu.be/UAOKDYI0fBo

Another station appeared in the Hebrew language on 93.0: https://youtu.be/hCYI0wKkur4

Several more Israeli stations were identified, then another Arabic (I think) language station appeared on 90.7: https://youtu.be/P-HFWR6DRE4

There are a few more unidentified stations which I will dig out this evening and add below.

Thanks if anybody can throw any light on the unidentified stations.

Hi, congrats on your log.

97.8 FM = KAN Reshet Gimel, Eitanim transmitting site (Hebrew)
105.1 FM = KAN Kol Har Tabut, Eitanim transmitting site (what language is that? at least it doesnt seem to be Hebrew or Arabic at all)

Kol Har Tabut means culture and was formerly called Reshet Alef during IBA Kol Israel times

this tx is located on a mental hospital
you can find a picture of the mast at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eitanim
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... tanim1.jpg

88.7 FM, no idea I do not hear any ID in this clip but I am not very good with arabic, you better ask Senderjaeger who is a pro on Arabic stations
you have these possibilities regarding the direction of your log:
JBC Radio from Ammam / Jordan OR
Izat Al Shark from Saida / Lebanon OR
Radio Al Masr from Alexandria / Egypt

88.2 FM, very strange - unlisted in JOR and LBN, also smooth jazz-station 88FM from ISR does not fit in (as in Hebrew and English)
Alexandria / Egypt is listed with Radio Hits, do they interrupt musical px for prayers?? In Malta they do so ! probably rather West Bank or Palastina

93.0 FM - is planned for Tel Aviv due to FMLIST and I found out it is already used by Radio Kol Hay in both Jerusalem and Tel Aviv:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_r ... _in_Israel (very good listing by the way at least if you consider its only Wikipedia)

90.7 FM presumed PBC as not listed either in JOR, EGY nor LBN

hi John,

I received Quranic prayer on 90.7 MHz today at 0942 UTC, but my recording is diferent then yours. Your reception was at 0905 UTC, so much earlier. Possibly these are two diffrent stations. 90.7 was weak & brief and I really didn't have a time to confront it with any webstream.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BzU0xg ... hLOXM/view

These are excellent catches, by the way. So far the best opening for you John? Am I right?

Happy DX!

Thank you PFM and Zach.

Just a quick reply for now as I have come back to this quite late - and I want to be up and about earlier tomorrow, just in case this all repeats.

Thanks PFM for the IDs on 97.8 and 105.1. I have already been told by Panos in Greece that these are 100% certain. He knows these two well as he receives them regularly on Es.

93.0 is Radio Kol Chai from Bnei Brak. I have yet to check this one again but I am told there is an ID in there! So many Israelis today! Tel Aviv was also present on 88.0. That would make six Israeli transmitters!

Hopefully I might find out who the Arabic stations are. Palestine does seem likely in view of the conditions.

More recording checking tomorrow.

Congrats on your great catches from Israel, John! The one on 93.0 is Radio Kol Chai for sure, the ID is heard at 18 seconds.

I can't hear any clue in your recording of 88.7 though. Radio Masr was received in Hungary about 20 minutes before your reception with what sounded like a phone-in show, but apparently the presenter was female at that time (https://youtu.be/B6kUuLMNosY).

The one on 90.7 is Arabic and references to Fatah and Al-Quds (Jerusalem) are heard, so maybe it's PBC.

Well, I just realised that I have another interesting station on my 88.2 recording. I was more curious about the Holy Quran station in my 99.2 video https://youtu.be/UAOKDYI0fBo but that soft pop song is the one being played on KAN 88, so another outlet! Efrat seems to be the logical site, as opposed to Sapir, plus Erfat is more in keeping with the line of reception. I'll see if I can find any other outlets to confirm this.

// Yes, KAN HaTarbut from Efrat is just audible on 105.3. Also KAN Gimel, Efrat on 97.5. Reshet Bet ID on 95.2 at 0903, also Efrat.

More stations added to the log. More UNIDs too but probably not a lot to go on. One thing which I notice is that most of Arabic unids tie in nicely with Amman frequencies.

For what they are worth:

93.3 unid Israel 0903 23-07-17 https://youtu.be/VNKqNCnKh64
96.3 unid Arabic 0906 23-07-16 https://youtu.be/jSktKs-DKH8
97.0 unid Arabic 0906 23-07-16 https://youtu.be/2jyRCuCW_aY
98.6 unid Arabic 0906 23-07-17 https://youtu.be/3w3CDoX80M8
101.8 unid 0902 23-07-17 https://youtu.be/6sUAqQCwrpQ
102.1 unid 0902 23-07-17 https://youtu.be/cDsuvYJxJbU

New (identified) additions:

92.1 KOL Barama, Jerusalem 0903 23-07-17 (3660 km) https://youtu.be/i-yjlyjhUeM
95.5 KAN Bet, Jerusalem 0909 23-07-17 (3652 km) https://youtu.be/LBCiGXYOGvI
95.8 Radio Darom, Eshkolot or Sapir 0903 23-07-17 https://youtu.be/civpHl_hWyw
96.6 Galei Zahal (Galatz), Jerusalem 0906 23-07-17 (3652 km) https://youtu.be/cr-01fjTL8c

Still pinching myself.

Thank you Sylvestre.

I almost missed this opening here too as I was in still asleep. I wasn't going to get out of bed for another hour or more so I was so close to missing this completely! I don't know what made me think "get out of bed you lazy lump. There could be some exotic Israeli DX coming in!" :)

A big thank you to Nick G for pointing out the fact that my Efrat loggings on 88.2, 97.5 and 105.3 could also be from Atara in Palestine. All three stations have transmitters in both locations for each frequency, so my reception could be of either. It's a pity that signals weren't stronger as I would have been able to find out the transmitter site from the PS name. I will amend my loggings.

Hi Tim.

Thanks for this. Just looking for the bandscan.

The problem is, there are multiple transmitters of at least four of my loggings and I have had to amend them. At least two of the transmitters, i.e. Jerusalem and Beer Sheva, are definite. I wish I could narrow down the rest, but that won't be possible.

You are very welcome Andy!

I might have exhausted everything now. A few more additions today. Maybe there's one or two more bits lurking somewhere, but that's for another day. Need to catch up with other files now.

Thank you for listening PFM. Are any of these conclusive? i.e. with IDs or some other proof?

It does seem logical that Amman was received. I need to find an Arabic speaker and I may still have the email address of somebody who helped me last year.

Doesn't Radio Darom broadcast in Hebrew?

Well despite careful listening I failed to log any exotics - there was too much activity from the Balkans. A couple of hundred km made all the difference.

However - see my post for the 27th :) a couple of minutes of Lebanese reception as an opening to Greece/Balkans faded away.

John - I'm very interested in what your general reception conditions were like at the time you got the cornucopia of exotics. I think that recordings are the key to picking up exotics as the reception tends to last only a few minutes at best and I'm also getting the feel that the double-hop exotics appear before an opening develops fully or as it fades out. My reception of the Middle East on 5th Aug 2016 was definitely preceding a major opening.

Well done on your Lebanese loggings Dave.

Wow! I never thought I'd read comments like "cornucopia of exotics". It was a very lucky ten minutes.

My Israeli reception came in the middle of a fairly intense opening to the Balkans. One thing I notices was that there were many personal first timers in there, but that fact alone probably doesn't mean anything much. Just that everything was on-path. The path to Israel seemed quite tight too, so I can probably rule out Egypt and Lebanon for my UNIDs. Palestine and Amman seem highly likely for these.

I really ought to upload some of the SDR files for posterity. Perhaps these would be useful Dave. Which would you choose for starters? I'll have to open another Mediafire account to accommodate them. I'll start uploading tomorrow, but let me know if any particular time is more useful and I'll start with those first.
