More unids from 2015-06-21

Post by John Faulkner, Skegness » 12 Jul 2015 20:40

The 21st of June is throwing up some fantastic catches. Damla FM seems to be in there on 87.5, or something very similar, plus there are a few snippets of very brief but quite exotic sounding singing on a few other frequencies. But two recordings of interest:

I don't think there is anything to go on with these, but Arabic speaking stations appeared on 90.4 (probably Albania FM, which continues to try to catch me out) and another one on 91.2, which intrigued me. I am more interested in 91.2 as I cannot imagine who this could be with the conditions running in the direction of Moldova and Slovenia/Bosnia. Extending this path would take things into Egypt. The only Tunisian possible is a 1.2 kW Radio Tataouine which I don't believe I have seen logged. I'm sure other stations would have been coming through from Tunisia had this one been coming through. There aren't any station in Libya listed on 91.2 either and I'm sure it's safe to forget about Algeria at this time - 18:04 UTC.

There was an interesting music station on 92.5 at the same time. The language of the singer sounds quite Balkan to me, so I don't expect this to be anything out of the ordinary, but when the singing stops and the music continues, the quartertones make this sound unusual. I didn't think Balkan countries made use of quartertones in their music. I was asked what quartertones were the other day. Wikipedia explains: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arab_tone_system and the clip:

I will post the unid 90.4 as, not I think about it, there was nothing from Albania on other frequencies.

Hi John.

91.2 is definitely Arabic as I hear repeated uses of 'Bismillah' which means 'in the name of God', so Qur'anic programming. I'd post it to Real DX too as Tarek in Cairo could possibly help.

92.5 sounds very Balkan to me.

90.4 is definitely Arabic and not Albanian. It might be Radio Setif as it has the similar quiet modulation that I have heard from this station. I received Radio Setif on the 21st at 1854 UTC, if that helps:

Thanks Nick.

Not sure if Algeria would have been coming in. The path was 100% Balkan at the time, unless a path was just opening up to Algeria. Seems unlikely. Also, Moldova was being received.

Just checked historical data for 6m at 1804 on the 21st June. There were no paths open to the south. Of course you can never rule these things out completely, but there were a couple of paths coming out of Israel, one of which was to G4SGX in Norwich. Interesting!

Very interesting. There is a Radio Masr listed from Ismailia in EGY with 61.5 kW. Most intriguing.

Whatever it is it sounds different to my 90.4 UNID which sounded quite overmodulated to me:

Additional: Is that ERTU he is saying at about 20 seconds? We need Tarek's ears!

Not sure Nick. I used Google Translate but I don't know how reliable this is. I entered the letters E R T and U converted English to Arabic so I could hear the pronunciation, but the Arabic pronunciation sounded virtually the same as the English pronunciation. Can't trust this. Hopefully Tarek will have the answer. I have posted to RealDX.

92.5 might be Serbia. I remember getting plenty of stations from there during the opening of that day.

90.4 sounds very much like Algeria with their over-processed modulation.
