Lebanese stations - on 27 July 2017

Post by daveB » 29 Jul 2017 15:15

A nice bonus after trawling through a load of I/Q files recorded on the 27th July 2017.

I had found low level SpE activity from around 1435 UTC which had yielded a number of Greek stations over a period of around an hour before conditions changed to favour the Balkans. Activity was never strong and individual stations would come and go - but most Greek stations appear to give RDS at low signal levels so I built up quite a respectable log.

http://www.fmlist.org/fm_logmap.php?dat ... &omid=2414

By 1620 UTC signals were getting weaker - so I was delighted to find a weak signal give a PI code of A2B8 on 89.5. I had to re-run the recording a couple of times to convince myself it was genuine. There were three other traces on the waterfall that indicated they were likely from the same area and tuning to 89.3 I was amazed to find a YL giving an address in arabic with the phrase "Block B" in - exactly the same as I had recorded on 05 Aug 2016! So confirmation of reception from Lebanon. On 90.8 I got a solid pi code of A235 - from Radio Sevan in Sidon.

And finally on 89.7 another station that is indicated to be from Lebanon because the waterfall display is the same as Virgin Radio on 89.5 and similar to that on 90.8. This station was playing 'pop music' - so may well be Ciel FM from Sidon.

I've linked the recordings - which include "interference" as the main station fades out - but the interference may in one case be exotic.

89.3 MHz https://app.box.com/s/h6v93y74e0kl329yl0agjb0u6gtc22w2 Aabey

89.5 MHz https://app.box.com/s/9u8v94gnbgprctzziuoalyptl7sbcpmc Beirut

89.7 MHz https://app.box.com/s/8chnhg7tajf5dlvzv0tmrc25dn821k7n Ciel FM?

90.8 MHz https://app.box.com/s/fmqrcgvxcpg0g4nnungz47k59c0tcwi3 Sidon

If anyone can confirm that the one on 89.7 is Ciel FM it would be helpful - I doubt it is the Sawr al Horriya - would be transmitting that genre of program.

Very nice Dave! I also hear 'Beirut' at 56 secs on your 89.3 clip. It sounds like it's referencing a business because it is followed shortly after by a telephone number.

I may have just missed this as I got home at about 5.20 pm local on that day and it was a couple of minutes before I had things up & running for recording. There was very little on the band by then, just one or two signals from the Baltic region. Mike Fallon logged 3 Egyptian stations in this opening too.

Can we have these exotics in the evening or at the weekend next time please?
Good DX.

Hi Nick,
Have you considering adding an SDR receiver (SDRPlay, AirSpy or why) to you repetoire? Then you can record and time shift. It pays dividends - but whether you consider it acceptable depends on whether you consider that "it is only DX if you hear it live". For myself the fascination is to find out just what can be propagated at VHF.

Edit - just spotted the files have been labelled as "27Jun2017" - definitely were 27 July - I'll edit the names

I have considered it Dave but I could see it becoming a potential nightmare. When there was all that activity in June I was finding it hard enough to keep on top of logging and recordings as it was, let alone an SDR! Leaving one recording all day whilst I was at work would also quickly consume hard disk space!

Maybe one day, although I'd probably only use it if I knew there was a chance of exotics on the band.
