29 May 2016- possible Middle East recordings

Post by daveB » 30 May 2016 21:16

At 1254 UTC I decided to switch to wav file recording to catch on the hour station ids. Immediately Hungasry on 88.0 came up with a pi code - but with Quaranic chanting coming and going. On 88.0 there was another program - which came up strongly enough for someone to identify the language for me. The file switched slightly before the hour and the Quran'ic chanting got clearer - and also faded up on 88.0 to replace the previous station. The 87.9 and 88.0 signals were in synce I was switching back and forth several times (the marvels of SDR).

So here are two clips from the clearer parts of the transmissions. I would be intrigued to know if the language on the 88.0 clip can be heard. 88.0 clips starts with chanting then a distinctive bird song which appears to mark the program change and a possible station announcement. Then there is a period of talking om/yl

87.9 https://app.box.com/s/4eqj6srh61foqr0celwrlrl6y5oz48rc BTW you've got Omroep Zeeland in the backround as well as Catholic Radio from Hungary.

I wait with bated breath - and will be working my way up the frequencies - there is something on 89.0 but unfortunately Radio 2 from Wrotham is very strong.

PS I need a new keyboard input device! sorry for edits

Hi Dave. This is very interesting as I had the exact same stations with the same Quranic programmes on 87.9 and 88.0. The time of reception for me was from 1234 to 1301 UTC, so a little earlier than yours. I also had Hungarian mixing with 87.9 before it disappeared. Here's my recordings for comparison:

88.0: https://app.box.com/s/rg8hi8d3c7a64jqc5i3b37hzu4gh8xnl

87.9: https://app.box.com/s/6pcteibmqxdbvjd3te4lpzbeleakn1pu

87.9 Quran + Hungarian: https://app.box.com/s/hwic6xl6ji75rfbhdl7oxt9hwxa7m7gb

It's definitely worth posting this to both the Skywaves Yahoo group and the Real DX Yahoo group too. Fingers crossed you can get an ID on them. This was around the same time that Iran appeared on 89.0 here (1248 UTC).
Good DX.

Hi Nick,

on 87.9 it's definitely the same male vocalist as my reception

Then there is this one on 91.5: https://app.box.com/s/57qeetgx48nmf4v5m19v9zndmdytpapo

It is getting more excitiong..... [definite senior moment - it is 89.0! as on the clips]

89.0 before the hour: https://app.box.com/s/mti70z7zkuxransrfjiuxgz7wp4688dl

And what may be the biggie! 89.0 after the hour - at the end of the clip there is a programme id - yl saying "Radio Jaava.." just as it is fading of cpourse. I don't know if there is more than one station in this clip - and I've repeated the id. I can't see any other programme in FM List - other than Radio Javan that will fit. Surfmusic.de lits the format as "Mix"

"Radio Jaava(n)? 89.5 https://app.box.com/s/w8xfg1u3742omg89htee4ob3zinmfgst

Confirmation would be really good!

The ID heard at 2:26 in the 1304 UTC recording certainly sounds like Radio Javan. Congrats on that great catch.

The stations on 88.0 and 91.5 are Arabic but I cannot make out any ID nor other clues to the country or countries of origin.

Superb reception Dave! I listened to the first 89.0 clip and it definitely sounds like a 'Radio Javan' ID to me. So this is presumably what I had too. The second clip (which you have said is on 89.5 is 89.0 according to the file) and is dominated by a Hungarian station. It does sound like a Radio Javan ID though near the end. The first 89.0 clip is definitely the best for clarity and consistency.

91.5 is in Arabic as Matthias said and I hear the word 'Loubnan' at 46 seconds (Lebanon in Arabic) so maybe the station is from there? Tarek at Real DX should be able to help more with that one.

The question is, will May 29th turn out to be the best double-hop opening of the season or is there more to come?
Good DX.

Hi Nick and everyone,

Thanks for the feedback - wow! Serendipitous as 1) switched from scanning to recording at just the right time and 2) aerial was beaming a bit further round than normal - roughly 110 deg - instead of the usual 130 degree parking spot

My typong is getting worse (to borrow a Goons joke). It was of course 89.0. The question is which transmitter? I've worked my way through the Romanian and Hungarian stations coming through at the same time as the recording - and the bearing for all of them bar one is 98 deg. The other is 100 deg - so that should narrow down the possibles. You can't assume the strongest tx is the one as I've logged a 50 watt station from Cluj in Romania at thgis time and another one of 160 watts earlier!

As to 91.5 being Lebanon - strong TV signals were received at 1330 UTC - in Sorn nr Ayr - from Jordan. So it is very possible - and I've got wav files covering that period...so watch this space - I may find more and with an announcement.

Bed now and it won't be until tomorrow afternoon I can got back to the files.
