June 29 0530 UTC - tropo duct to Switzerland

Post by daveB » 30 Jun 2015 16:10

The SDRPlay was left on overnight and when I checked the RDSSpyLog against the scanner time log I found that RTE Uno from Switzerland on 107.8 had been present from around 0515 to 0545 UTC. Distance 770 km. There were five entries in total showing the signal was at RDS level for five of the six passes that the scanner would have made in the time. The only other station of note was hr3 from Grosser Feldberg (555km) from 0435 to 0527 - appearing 10 times in the log, five of those entries carrying rolling text. There was plenty of activity from Belgium, Holland and France as well.

I know it's not as exciting as actually hearing it live - but at least I know a duct was present.

When I looked this morning Dave there was no tropo reaching these parts. I have been out this afternoon and, on my way back home, I tuned into a few Dutch stations I have pre-set on the car radio, i.e. 87.7 Radio 10, 87.9 Omoep Zeeland and Egem frequencies, and all were fully quieting (excluding the flutteryness you get when driving).

Just listening to 107.8 I am pretty sure I just heard Rete Uno from Santis. That Future Radio thing from Norwich is mixing with it, so I need more signal to be 100% sure. Things are definitely picking up here at last. Most of the recent tropo has passed me by.

Good DX!

Lots and lots of French tropo here last night and this morning including low-powered verticals from Caen, Cherbourg, Le Havre and around. Didn't notice Switzerland here but there was a very good signal from France Culture on 98.4 from Clermont-Ferrand, a full 3 bars w/RDS by the time I left for work (684 km). The other frequencies from there: 90.4, 95.5 and 102.5 were also in. Other txes heard include Argenton-sur-Creuse, Tours, Lyon Mont Pilat and I think, Guéret on 100.7 (it was fighting with Cherbourg and Dudelange). The usual nearer French txes were of course much enhanced!
Good DX.

I've just looked at the Hepburn chart for 6 am this morning it's very interesting. There was a small area of enhancement over my bit of the UK,a small bit of enhancement close to Sitzwerland , and an area of enhancement mid-way between. This suggests three separate refractions of the signal between Sittingbourne and Santis at the time.
