Driving back today from the Welsh coast, across the hills north of Llangollen (town + tx) I was listening to BBC R Wales on 95.3 (// 882kHz ) for traffic news, and as we got close to Llangollen I thought there should be a better service on 95.4. The RDS didn't retune so eventually I tuned manually and on 95.4 there was a different px, too weak for RDS, with a presenter who had a Welsh accent. Either there are regional variants of R Wales, or by coincidence R Newcastle had a Welsh presenter.
My wife was trying to sleep so I never resolved this strange observation...

thanks for the tip, i'll look into it later this month

ps: the RDS info was automatically inserted by FMlist, I don't own anything that decodes PI codes these days

the separate PI's would certainly imply split px

frequencies where the split traffic px would be useful for ID'ing a tx :
94.8 Llandonna & Ton Pentre
95.1 (carmel & blaenavon)
95.9 Haverford West & Christchurch

Wrexham Rhos Radio Wales TX radiation pattern shows that W/R is restricted in the direction of Llangollen but as Radio Wales from Blaenplwyf has a different PI to W/R and Llangollen I think this is due to sports reports being different.

Image

I don't listen to Radio Wales so don't know if that is the case as it this did happen with Radio Cymru different PI's for sports programs.
I receive W/R 95.4 very good here and when Blaenplwyf 95.3 comes up I end up with an echo lol.

So a great DX spot AND good coffee! That sounds like heaven. Real ales too, perhaps? (No - don't tell me, that will be too much for me in this almost 'dry' town (real ales terminology meaning "no real ales").

Well done on finding a new DX hotspot - and fantastic log! Looking forward to reading more logs Tim.

Pint of Fosters anybody? (Ugh! Not bloody likely!)
