Southampton Common Files 04-08-2018

This is not a full bandscan, but Tim wanted to see the files to see if any of the transmitters had faults or oddities that would help identify them.

Recorded with SDR Sharp. SDR Play RSP 1.

What's the recorded bandwidth? Just downloaded to see if it would play in my FDM-S2, but it didn't. I am going to try to change the file header so need the recorded bandwidth. Thanks.

These are 1.536 MHz.

You can also download SDR# for free from the Airspy site, it should play these with no trouble, but you might have to flip the IQ (there's a tick box for that on the controls panel).

The centre frequency is in the filename already.

It didn't work. Thanks anyway.

I might get SDR# at some point. It's a great bit of software.

// I can't see a download link on that page, just a link to some SDR# plugins. Then there is an ad for "Meet With Unmarried" dating on http://rtl-sdr.ru/category/sdrsharp. I give up immediately with pages like this.

Ah, you've found the Russian plug-in site.

https://airspy.com/download/ is the site you want. Choose 'Windows SDR Software Package'. It doesn't have an installer, just unzip it to a folder on your C Drive and click 'SDRSharp.exe' to start it.

That's done it. Thanks.

Just listened to your first file so far. I hear 89.0 which I presume is a pirate. Some meteor scatter pops up on 87.6 too, together with a very weak French station. Maybe RMC Info.

really nice clean files
you can see Crystal Palaces offset on 88.796 during speech

88.802 France, Jersey or passing I-trip?

The pirate looks to be about 87.596-598, the low modulation (50khz b/w) is good from my point of view will help me detect it from a distance.
shazam says the song is dogtown (bass kleph steamed up extended remix) by infusion i thought it was nitzer ebb or someone industrial

One of the French signals on 88.2 may very well be RCF from Le Havre. Even with my horizontal Yagi it's quite regular here during cross-Channel tropo.

BBC Radio 2 on 89.8 is probably the Hemdean relay near Reading.
Good DX.

88.9 - probably France Inter Le Havre.
89.0 - that sounds like France Culture's style of programming. Le Mans is virtually permanent here on scatter.
Good DX.

Great!

However, you need to invert the IQ, as the pirate is on 87.6 :)

The checkbox to do this is 'Swap I & Q', bottom right of the Radio tab in the left hand panel.

Note that like a lot of the cheaper SDRs, the center freq on and SDRPlay is obscured by the IQ spike. DC/IQ compensation is turned on but it doesn't get rid of the spike entirely.

I've no idea what the spike at 88.0 is, just some local interference I expect. Even with it notched out (you'll need to install the IF processor plugin which has a notch filter), I hear and see nothing else at 88 though.

Also, be aware that the SDRPlay does have image problems because of it's design, so not everything is a real signal. A good way to check is if it's the same distance from the center freq as a strong station, and it's the same audio but weaker, that is probably an image. However, it's much better than an RTL dongle.

I've been considering the Airspy HF+ lately.

90.1 second file - This is a mixture of Hope FM and a mirror image of Radio 2 from the other side of waterfall.

13-20-34_90300kHz.wav

This one has image problems from Radio 3 - Notice there is a mirror of 90.7 on 89.9, but also quite surprising is 89.5 which can't be the usual mirror image as the signals are too weak for that on the other side of the waterfall. What caused that I couldn't say.

I never understood the IQ thing, so I'd better leave it to those who understand.

As always, very interesting to be able to tune (part of) a band from another part of the country on your own receiver.

thanks re: 90.1
i didn'[t realise it was sdr play, hence my confusing remarks about HF+
your set up is really not bad at all, gain seems good for a portable arrangement

certainly excellent for my purposes

re: 88.2 i'll guess that RCF is the stronger of the 2, do they bother with news on the hour or go right over the hour?

1st file to try fill in the unknowns suggested above:

87.6 must be SWR, our local pirate station
87.8 most likely Radio Courtoisie from Cherbourg, a regular here during tropo from northern France
88.2 Edit: Just seen my log for French tropo & have received RCF from Le Havre in a past opening, so you could have had that as well
88.3 cpuld be a BBC Radio 2 relay which is a regular here, also there is Virgin Radio from Cherbourg France during good tropo
88.8 I have only noted a BBC R2 relay here, nothing else
