Fibre broadband speed differences

Post by daveB » 31 Oct 2019 19:27

My FTTC broadband connection went live around 6 pm. Initial testing showed everything to be OK - in fact better than OK.

I was promised a minimum of 36 Mb/s down loaded, and was expecting 4-5 Mb/s upload speed. All my computing devices are wireless.

My desktop PC with in-built wireless card and diversity reception is giving 37.0 Mb/s down and 9.2 Mb/s down. So I can't complain about that - it comfortably exceeds their promise.

My Bush Spira B2 8" tablet is giving 18.0 down / 9.1 up, whilst my Moto C smartphone is giving 9-10 down and 9.0 up. Both were tested in the vicinity of the desktop PC which is upstairs and the router in downstairs about 5 m away through a floor and one solid wall. Downstairs, about 2.5m from the router I got almost identical speeds.

Why the difference? Is it down to antenna size? Or is it affected also by the CPU speed? - those in tablets/phones being much lower capability than in a desktop.

I can imagine that anyone using only a wi-fi connected tablet would be complaining bitterly they are not getting the promised speed.

For info - ADSL was giving 5 Mb up / 0.9 Mb down on wi-fi - and as far as I remember was similar on all devices - not that I use the phone for web browsing.

A bit more checking and I find it is very much dependent on the speed checker you use.

on the phone between 21:0 and 21:15 - in order of testing
broadband.co.uk - 38.9 down/2.5 up - 52 ms ping - run a couple of times to confirm slow upload
broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk - 34.6 down / 5.16 down 34 ms ping
talktalk speed test - 26.6 down / 9.3 up - 18 ms ping
M-lab (the one used in 1st post) 9.2 down / 9.1 up - 18 ms ping.

repeated checking will lead to madness
