Fake MUFs - DX Maps

Post by John Faulkner, Skegness » 03 Jul 2017 19:58

I am surprised by the number of fake MUFs being reported on DX Maps this season.

Some hams are reporting tropo as sporadic E. This misreporting of the propagation mode seems to be increasing, resulting in isolated high MUFs.

can confirm. just ridiculous watching deep red or purple fields with coincidence or fantasy numbers like 256, 304, 198 or 320 MHz while there's NOTHING to hear and also NO logs the whole day on the web. always disappointing when tuning in after getting an Alert on "High MUF" and there's not much going on.

Indeed.

The main culprit is DK8NE. He did start reporting tropo/scatter as tropo the other day, but he's back to reporting these as Es again.

DK8NE is Uli Leicht and his email address is DK8NE@web.de (information via qrz.com).

Drop him an email and let him know.

tried to find out but unfortunately:

Login is required for additional detail.

bit surprising that sb. has a call-sign ID (dont have one myself after 20 years of DX or so ;) ) but does obviously not know the difference between tropo and ES.

there are still secrets abt. propagation and I sometimes keep on wondering bt. certain logs (like < 600 from PL during E-skip) but dividing tropo from ES is one of the easiest things and probably the first one you learn by tuning in during summer months, esp. regarding the fading behavior ;)

Registering on qrz.com is free. It's the go-to directory to find ham details.

It doesn't help if someone using FMList forgets to switch the DXMaps link "off" whilst simultaneously forgetting to set the date correctly when logging recordings. I hope I'm not the only one who has made that mistake

Plenty of fake spots on the Es map tonight with a strong tropo duct between SW England and the Canaries/Cape Verde. Tropo logs are being reported as Es causing a phantom cluster to appear off NW Spain.
Good DX.

WTF ?! distance between Plymouth and CPV is more than 4100 kilometres. hard to believe this should be tropo. :o
even CNR is abt. 2700 k. I experienced ducting up to 1300 kilometres myself and have read about 1600 k but this sounds out of range.
regarding my insignificant knowledge in physics, such a distance may not be passed during tropo in Europe (at least not during these temperatures). :?

remember world record is 4081 km between Hawaii and Mexico...guess it's about 20 degrees hotter over there.

ES triple /multihop +tropo seems more realistic.

Contacts are being reported on 2m between UK and EA8 today and yesterday however I have found no reports of contacts between UK and D4 in last few days.
