MS pings in the last 90min

Post by atfmdx »

I've had a couple of MS pings in the last 1 1/2 hours. Unfortunately they were very brief and weak so I couldn't identify any of them.
Did anyone get something in the same time period?

I wasn’t listening
The meteor calendar didn’t predict anything significant this month

But we should organise a collective listening experiment like the long wave beacon dxers & the medium wave carrier monitoring group do but for scatter on FM

John Faulkner expressed some interest in this

We should synchronise our clocks ⏰ so we can match meteor bursts or jet scatter peaks exactly when comparing our recordings

Who’s with me?

I would suggest recording IQ files from 0400-0600utc
Because that’s when I get my best stuff, but we can discuss it if that’s not practical for you

Lets find out which part of the band suits everyone best
A 2MHZ chunk of band will be enough for detailed analysis.

Those with no sdr can choose the best frequency in that block

I can't do this just yet as I don't have an FM setup where I am staying. The plan is to get a couple of FM5s on a mast soon. I will wait for the MW season to finish first, so next month for me.

Cool, it gives us time to plan and to drum up interest :-)

I don't suppose there's ever been a mass FM MS DX session with several DXers participating simultaneously and across more than one country.

I wonder if Nick would be interested in this. Andy in Wigan would be up for it I guess.

From what I remember, Nick and I have compared our MS in the past and we noted how some pings were received by us both, while others weren't, which is probably exactly as we might expect. But if we all stuck to a rigid plan and monitored the same frequency, etc. we might observe something of interest.

well i'm officially in isolation for 12 weeks now so ready to start plans

Okay, fellow dxer's i wish for participating for your experiment but i have not acces for monitor the meteor scatter 24/7 because my work but when i am in the home okay why not. Have you recommendation for antenne ideal for meteor scatter i have read in various foums a dipole cut @ 98mhz is ok because may be my 48-240mhz home brew antenne can be to directional?

Good DX

In case your antenna is directional you have to beam straight east or maybe a little north of east for best MS results at your QTH in western France.
At your 2nd QTH in central France I'd recommend an omnidirectional antenna.

Any aerial that receives well will be fine for meteor
You need raw gain, so use whatever gives the strongest signals.
The Aerials will need to be outside preferably on the roof

What times can you listen/record?

Tim is right my hearing is rubbish along with loud Tinnitus so makes listening to MS or MW very difficult if it wasn't for RDS I wouldn't be doing FM-DX either.
I did have good hearing when I was younger until I was 52 then my hearing went bad hospital said it's probably meniere's disease I have had the vertigo when this happened but not for many years now I do get regular dizzy spells.
Now here's a thing I suffered headaches and migraines almost daily all my life all this went when my hearing went bad.

I’m having trouble with the elads clock
When playing back recordings the time is consistently 45 seconds slow at the top of the hour
I’ve repeatedly updated my pc clock but elad is unchanged

Ideally I need to solve this before our Listening exercise
So we can properly compare weak traces

we're doing a test recording overnight on 99.9 (the chat group compared our bands and settled on 99.9. if you have a strong local on 99.9 and wish to participate 106.4 is our second choice)

if you can make IQ files then 192khz or wider is perfect
for those unable to make IQ files, audio recordings are acceptable
the bit we're interested in is 0400-0800utc

its probably easier to start the recording before you go to bed , stop it when you get up and discard the unwanted hours

good luck. hopefully tonights exercise will reveal any problems we need to fix.
Botswana dxers welcome!

well,
99.9 was unusually quiet here but i''m only 40 minutes into playback

Bigic1 in Serbia built an aerial for the radio in his phone, and he actually caught a ping
he recorded overnight and plays back the audio through audacity and can see the audio peaks on the file
well done Bigic!

another dxers computer crashed and corrupted his overnight recording

Hi,
This is Jorge from Northern Spain. I am just starting with MS (please, see my message on unidentified board) and I would like to take part in this MS exercise in the future. I am a proud owner of an ELAD FDM-S2 and an SDRPlay RSP1A. The latter much better because of the sensitivity as I live in a quiet rural area. My antenna is a 1/2 wave vertical Fanfare FM-2G.

Kind regards!

Jorge

Hi Tim,
That's perfect! I underline date and time then!
Is there any link or document on Meteor Scatter DXing on FM Band to browse and get further info?
¡Buen DX!
