Atmospheric enhancement around East Anglia and nearby

Post by Alex Cator » 26 Dec 2014 15:07

I have heard LBC 97.3 (Croydon) and Heart 102.6 (either Oxford or Bakers Wood) here in East Harling, Norfolk. They don't normally come in on my setup, plus VRT Radio 2 Oost-Vlaanderen (Egem), all the Lille/Bouvigny transmissions, and Viking FM (High Hunsley), which constantly fade in and out under flat conditions at my QTH with my house's loft TV antenna and my unmodified Sony ST-SB920, were there more often than usual, and North Norfolk Radio (Stody) had PI CBB6, and BBC Lincs (Belmont) was in stereo. I am guessing some kind of atmospheric enhancement over the East of England and surrounding area, and it is not quite tropo because there was nothing around here on the F5LEN tropo map. 73, Alex, new member of Skywaves.

Quite obviously high pressure. I went in the car for a trip to Thetford and had BBC Kent 104.2 (Swingate) there but weak.

Welcome to the forum Alex.

A quick check on the band here reveals very poor conditions. I think high pressure is supposed to be building in the next few days. Hopefully these conditions spread this way soon.

Good DX!

I once remember a trip to Skegness in the car a few months ago, with a tropo above Holland and Norfolk, that brought foreign stations to my location, with Sky Radio (HOL - Hilversum/Media Park-Alticom, 101.2) up to King's Lynn, and I got very weak VRT Radio 2 (BEL) from Egem at Spalding (near Norfolk-Lincolnshire borders) with absolutely nothing in East Lindsey apart from Sky Radio up a Wold near Partney. Absolutely no foreign stuff, even Hilversum or IJsselstein, in Skegness. Sometimes you may experience times, even when a Norfolk DXer like me gets something, it may not be audible in Skegness, despite us being in counties next to each other.

John, I do think your car radio is very sensitive if you get Q-music from IJsselstein while driving around Skegness. The stock radio in my Dad's Ford Focus Mk.III struggles to get it even in Lowestoft, with worse signals than yours in Skegness, despite that stock Ford radio being good compared to many, so your Blaupunkt Nashville is outstanding if it can outperform a stock modern Ford unit. One of the best head units for DXing.

Oh yes. Enhancements can be very localised at times. The band can be as flat as a very flat pancake one minute, then spring to life the next. The colder months don't really do much for any kind of DX, well, apart from meteor scatter, which seems to carry on all year. In fact it's amazing what meteor scatter can bring.

The reception of Ijsselstein in the car on my video was during particularly buoyant summer's evening around sunset when conditions tend to lift up a little. It's certainly not like that all the time here. At best I only get vague signals at the back of the box from Ijsselstein and Egem if I drive around town. Signlas usually pick up to a degree just a couple of miles west of Skegness on the A158 where the land starts to rise towards the Wolds.

Welcome to the group Alex :) Conditions have been very flat here today and it's been raining continuously since lunch time so perhaps not surprising. Conditions look like they will build next week though:

I look forward to reading your reports on here.
Good DX.

I do presume it was flat around here, but, even without tropo, and just flat conditions, high pressure can enhance Band 2. Forgot to say that BBC R1 in Pontop Pike was also stronger than normal. It fades in a few times every single day, and the 98.1 BBC R1 proved it was Pontop and not Rowridge. The fading reminds me of Sporadic-E propagation, which I got a few of last summer. Maybe someone knows the propagation method of my Pontop Pike reception, and the same can bring in Sky R. (Hilversum) and Q-music (IJsselstein), with also the Bouvigny's from France like Info 105.2 and Bleu Nord 94.7. The daily signals of Pontop Pike, Hilversum, IJsselstein and Bouvigny are probably troposcatter, but I could be corrected, and Pontop Pike must be long range if even John Faulkner G1VVP, about 70 miles NW of me, can get it via meteor scatter. Pontop is my furthest scatter catch.

Did another check on my Sony ST-SB920 with the same antenna setup. Very flat conditions were there. I did get airplane (?) scatter from XFM and Absolute Radio in Crystal Palace, but XFM (104.9 MHz) was stronger. Just the fluttery sound of it made me think it was an airplane scatter. Also got a short troposcatter (?) from Pontop Pike, which is becoming really normal on my setup, but way too far for semi-local, and the troposcatter brought in a very weak signal on 98.6, most frequently VRT Radio 2 Oost-Vlaanderen in Egem. Apart from that nothing, and no French at all. Band 2 was noisy, since my parents were watching TV. The family TV in my house can interfere with my DXing, but I do not interfere with my parents, since they take their television more seriously than I take my DXing. Their TV all comes from Tacolneston.

Same here Tim. Very poor here but a small enhancement is starting to the London area. I also hear Sutton Coldfield coming up off the back of the beam. The rotation is restricted now, thanks to the neighbour's conifer tree. I only have north, through east and to the south. Beyond that and my front directer gets bent - as has happened twice and I have managed to straighten it so far. So no DX from France or Spain until I can find my hacksaw!

Hopefully the continental DX will cross The Wash shortly.

I got both Croydon (London) and Sutton Coldfield near-enough the same time - look at the thread "tropo starting".

Add Skegness into the equation. Brests now lifting here too (I didn't say that) and Holland also improving nicely.

I had France Inter 95.4, and France Musique 89.4, from Brest, on my Sony ST-SB920 with a ribbon wire antenna, amplified with a 10dB preamp. Very bad antenna setup, but the (much better) TV antenna in the loft, points towards Tacolneston (wrong direction for Brest), and is inaccessible without one falling through the ceiling. It beams towards Tacolneston, because most people in my area, apart from DXers, watch Tacolneston TV and listen to Tacolneston radio, with Kiss 105-108 Ipswich/Mendlesham being the only exception. Stoke Holy Cross is not in range here without a good radio and/or antenna.

Quite nearby to where I live, in the morning on my way to school, not far from me, it is just after sunrise, as it's now winter. Conditions lift up and signals of Croydon, Egem and Lille (Bouvigny-le-Mont) are available at the back of the box, daily. I'm not in usual range of them. For each transmitter, LBC (97.3), VRT Radio 2 Oost-Vlaanderen (98.6) and France Info (105.2) are the best stations. Some days, IJsselstein might be present, so Q-music (100.7) is the best station from there, as 98.9 NPO Radio 1 has to fight with Holme Moss, and 96.8 NPO 3FM can be swamped ever so slightly (even though the Ford stereo has DSP filtering) by KL.FM. 3FM (BBC Cymru from Wenvoe on some days) has got over the slight QRM that KL.FM gives off. Today, I had 101.2 Sky Radio from Hilversum, that morning. Conditions were very flat BTW.

Tropo today. Got loads of weak London signals, plus Humberside and some French/Flemish stuff. Lille/Bouvigny and Egem were the continental stations present.
