Severe Geo-Storm Expected September 6th-8th

Post by John Faulkner, Skegness » 05 Sep 2017 11:00

Thanks to Jim who just posted about this in the the chat.

DXLC http://www.solen.info/solar/ have issued this forecast:

"The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to active on September 5 due to effects from CH822. September 6 could start with quiet conditions. When the CME observed on September 4 arrives we could see minor to severe geomagnetic storming lasting until September 8."

So it looks like it could be a big one and maybe with aurora visible at lower latitudes.

With a bit of luck we might see some sizeable auroral activity.

High latitude medium wave DX will no doubt be destroyed for an extended period, perhaps a week or so. But maybe something good could come from this if southerly latitudes are enhanced, so it could be worth pointing antennas south for Africa. Hopefully South america will have a boost too.

It's possible, Franco. Auroral Es sometimes occur during geo-magnetic disturbances. Such openings occur more commonly in Northern Europe, so Norway, Sweden, Finland, etc. In England, we are less likely to experience these and it gets progressively less likely as you move south. I wonder how often auroral Es have been recorded in Italy? Maybe somebody can say.

Just as during the Es season, check DX maps" MUF ES" map and their 50 MHZ map to see if anything is happening over Europe.

(Being careful to ignore anything reported by DK8NE as he doesn't seem to know one propagation mode from another!)

No wonder the TA was non-existent overnight!

That's high-latitude DX out of the window for a while.

DXLC: "A recurrent southern hemisphere coronal hole (CH823) was in an Earth facing position on September 4-5. A recurrent northern hemisphere coronal hole (CH824) will likely rotate across the central meridian on September 10-12."

So the sun is going to fire ALL its guns straight at us for the next few days. :x

2nd storm just hit!

The first was last night (big one) causing a G4 class geomagnetic storm: see attached from http://aurorawatch.lancs.ac.uk/

Another big one hitting right now! The FM band is awash with messy signals.
