Tecsun PL-390

Post by Alex Cator » 18 Jan 2015 17:17

I own a Tecsun PL-390. It can grab almost daily reception of the Lille/Bouvigny powerhouse, here in Norfolk. I am going on holiday to the Netherlands in the summer 2015, and I would like to hear the best possible UK reception from there on a portable. How much better are the Eton E5 and Degen DE1103? Are they similar to the PL-390?
In addition, is my PL-390 (I guess the answer is yes) better than the little PL-310?

Cheers,
Alex Cator.

I had a Tecsun PL390. It just wasn't very sensitive, plus it was pretty wide. I have two Degen DE1103s and both are modified with narrower filters, but even without the filter mod this is quite selective for an off-the-shelf portable.

You won't go wrong with a DE1103 BUT you need to be careful you buy one of the earlier models as later ones were comparatively deaf and wide. I forget who the seller was on Ebay so hopefully somebody can remember. It was a seller in Hong Kong I believe.

I saw many Degen DE1103 radios on eBay, all for good amounts of money. The sellers are: g8hkshop (Hong Kong), anon-co (Hong Kong), iw1gea (United Kingdom), prettyonline11 (China), and sunslf (China). Are there any ways of spotting the difference between an old and a new 1103? It would be interesting. I can get daily continental stuff on my Tecsun 390 (general scatter from Lille/Bouvigny Le Mont), so I wonder what my 1103 will catch? I wonder what bandwidth of filter is best for an 1103?

Is the new boy on the block the Tecsun PL880 any good for band II?

Haven't heard anything about it for Band 2. It appears to be an excellent radio, from what I've watched on YouTube about it. The giant (and of course the best) of all the Tecsuns.

No the Tecsun 880 is poor on band 2.It is most definitely not a dx machine. It also has a small internal ferrite and no external antenna connection so is useless for MW dx. The narrow 2.3 khz filter for HF couldn't successfully reject stations 5khz away( ok it is just a portable and perhaps I'm being a little harsh and unrealistic) and it had a rattling distorted sound on SSB.

As far as portables go for band 2 dx I have found the 1103 and E5/G5 to be the most sensitive portables out there from stock . Once modified the selectivity out performs every Tecsun I've had.

According to A2C39A, the Eton E5 and Degen DE1103 have equal performance on Band 2. Do you think so? As you're in Norwich, how often do you receive continental European stations on Band 2, using the 1103 and E5? Doubt you need tropo!

Yes I agree that performance is more or less equal. I'm currently using a modified G5. I was at some stage last year using a modified 1103. As far as continental reception goes I used to get regular Dutch reception at varying levels using the 1103 and a simple dipole. It would take a lift though to get anything much from Germany,Belguim and France. My set up is very basic and I'm no longer strictly allowed outside aerials.
