Roberts Play 10

Post by pe1etr » 27 May 2017 07:07

I was going to buy a Roberts Play just for the FM RDS capability, but didn't want to wait 5/6 days for it to be delivered to a local Argos outlet, so I tried out the Play 10, which despite its name has a different form. It is a bit more user-friendly than the Play and slighly lighter. It also has a proper tuning knob which spins quickly and smoothly. It also doubles as a select switch.
The display has large characters, but only one ling of text. DAB reception seems very good, although probably not as DX-friendly as the Play. As I said the main reason I bought this radio was for FM RDS, and down by the seafront I got RDS from 106.6 3FM from the IOM, which is difficult as 2BR Preston is on 106.5.

It is not perfect though, as there is a spur from Radio Wave on 95.6 which is an anagram of the actual frequency of 96.5 :)

The price is a modest £40 and it is available at this price from various physical and online retailers.

Not wishing to advertise, I bought mine from a well-known retail park outlet which reminds one of a misspelt plural of Indian food ;)

There was some QRN where I tested it yesterday, so I'll try a quieter seafront location today. It was way to sunny to film the display yesterday but today it is cloudy so I'll make a video.

I am currently in a cheap and cheerful Blackpool guest-house, and FM recetion is lousy, although DAB is perfect.

I might have to go out and about to receive Es, which is is the main reason I wanted a portable with RDS. I already have the pocket-sized Roberts Sports DAB2, but the telescopic is short and fragile and tuning around on FM is a tad fiddly.

It sounds like a competent portable for dx, Peter. I won't buy one right away, I'll wait 'til you buy a 'Play' and post a comparison ;)

There is some buzzing which is self-generated, it wasn't qrn. This makes it difficult to receive weaker FM signals. There is no buzzing on DAB.

I recorded some video footage this morning making comparisons with a couple of other portables. I need to edit the footage into a video.

Update

I returned this radio for a refund. Don't buy it is my advice.

I bought a larger DAB/FM RDS radio from Sainsburys (jssr 5) - it was a clearance bargain for £15, originally £40. No DAB+, but it has stereo speakers and a line in so I can connect a hifi tuner.
