OFCOM gave a public consultation on the closure of some (not all) relays and on the 3dB power reductions for the five main transmitters. Consultation closed on 2nd of March so it shouldn't be long before we know the outcome.

think it is neccesary to reduce ´dubble transmission costs as the DAB coverage is excellent yet and there must be some day to provoke people switching over to digital. that will make no difference for oversea listeners e.g. I expect the signal quality (not strength) even to get better on 1215 while nowadays 7 different tx can be received here, maybe it will be 4 or 5 in the future like Talksport or BBC 5live does.

good step, regarded from the economic and ecological side. why waste ERP power if you can catch public on DAB with lower TRP at the same time? digital market is fast-growing in UK these days.

They inherited terrible tx network from BBC radio 3, 1215 is currently unusable at night almost everywhere and even in daytime here.
So we have a local relay on 1242
reducing tx power may make 1215 usable in some areas

The closures are now in progress. Guildford (Pirbright) (1260), Hoo (1197) and Swindon (1233) have gone.
Droitwich is reported to be carrying announcements advising you to use another medium, maybe other main tx have been doing the same but I've not been listening.

Check out your nearest Absolute relay, maybe you have another clear MW channel :)

Chesterton Fen (1197) and Greenside Scalp (Dundee) (1242) are also reported off now
I guess the channels to watch are 1197, 1233, 1242 and 1260

1242 Boston/Kirton Drove is still the strongest signal on the band, as usual. I don't think this one is being affected. I doubt it would make any difference if it reduces power. The only good thing about this tx is that it is a proper local without any kind of fading or distortion at night, and so can be nulled quite well. It would be nice if it left the band completely.

1233 is a minor mess at night.

1215 has multiple txs and is a total mess, day or night.

1197 has never been a problem.
