Changes to some BBC local radio MW services

Post by Brookman Spark » 12 Aug 2017 21:06

"We will be closing 13 medium wave transmitters in January 2018. Once the changes take effect, BBC Radio Sussex, Surrey, Humberside, Wiltshire, Nottingham, Kent, and Lincolnshire will no longer be accessible on medium wave. And there will be reduced medium-wave coverage for BBC Devon, Lancashire and Essex."

About time!

Next, can we please get rid of Absolute Radio?

Thanks for the news.

Some interesting options raised in Paul Groves' "Opinion: The Future of AM Radio - England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland"

http://www.frequencyfinder.org.uk/Opinion_AM.pdf

where he tells us "Absolute Radio’s AM broadcast licence expires on 30 April 2018."

As an occasional listerner to the station's MW output I hear promotional messages advising uptake of their digital alternatives, but not stating that MW is due to close. I don't know if those promos go out on DAB etc, they may well only run on MW.

Speculation on the end of Absolute's MW seems to have been around for as long as the station has but this month's announcement about BBC locals may be a catalyst for other closures, not necessarily complete closure. Or perhaps it'll be business as usual, at least for now.

Yes, perhaps so.

I always feel slightly guilty when I express my glee over the fact that more European transmitters are going to close, but this is obviously down to the fact that I am a keen MW DXer. It is of course extremely sad when these broadcasters close down after being on the air for decades.
