Italy MW closures

Post by Julian Hardstone » 06 Feb 2017 10:16

The Italian telecoms regulator has begun the process of closing MW use in Italy, with a series of notifications to broadcasters.

I have no further details, maybe someone can add to this

There is an update on Italy's MW plans in today's edition of "WORLDWIDE DX CLUB Top News compiled by Wolfgang Büschel, Germany"
https://www.wwdxc.de/topnews.shtml

(That link won't be correct when the next edition of Top News gets published in sevenish days' time)

Looks like Italy's MW use will change (from RAI to private?) rather than come to an end.

Today, I experienced that some RAI AM tx. from Sicily or Sardegna on 1062 kHz are still active.
(Those ones who do not run synchronized and were interfering Danmarks Radio in early years).

I think it's might be useful to summarise the situation of MW broasdcasters in Italy even if I am not a veritable fan of medium waves.

I will try to do it in three or four posts and I am going to start from RAI.

The amount of MW active transmitters of Rai has been strongly reduced over the years, and the last wave of sign offs has happened between 2013 and 2014.
The reasons of these switch offs are multiples: the obsolescence of the oldest outlets, the need for Rai to reduce budget, the electromagnetic pollution caused by some transmitters .

Currently there are only 13 active transmitters operated by Rai: all of them are been reported lately and -at present- there is no news about their possibile future switch off.
Twelve of them are broadcasting Radio1 and regional news bulletins (in brackets, you'll find the region of each transmitter):

657 Pisa Coltano (Toscana)
900 Milano Siziano (Lombardia)
936 Venezia Campalto (Veneto)
999 Torino Volpiano (Piemonte)
1062 Ancona Montagnolo (Marche)
1062 Cagliari Decimoputzu (Sardegna)
1062 Catania Codavolpe (Sicilia)
1107 Roma Monte Ciocci (Lazio)
1116 Palermo Monte Pellegrino (Sicilia)
1431 Foggia (Puglia)
1449 Belluno (Veneto)
1575 Genova Portofino (Liguria)

Another one broadcasts Radio Trst A, the broadcasts aimed to Slovenian speaking community living in the provinces of Trieste, Gorizia and Udine:
981 Trieste Monte Radio

Regional news are usually broadcast three times a day by all the Radio1 txs, both on medium waves both on Band 2 (this can be good to know also for FM Dxers who can identify a tx from the analisys of the broadcasting).
All times are CET:
7:18 to 7:25 (from Monday to Saturday)
12:10 to 12:25 (it starts at 12:15 on Sundays)
18:30 to 18:35 (only from Monday to Friday)

There are also some other special broadcasting produced and aired for four regions (Sicilia, Sardegna, Trentino Alto Adige and Friuli Venezia Giulia). Unfortunately the only schedule I've found doesn't seems very up to date:

They are off air since last Sunday: on Saturday the tx was producing a lot of noise and wasn't able to spread the regular broadcasting (while on 87.3 Mhz everything was ok and it's ok now) and probably they have turned off the tx, waiting for the fix.
I will inform you here when the mulfunction will be repaired.

In lack of Radio Studio X, last Sunday evening I've received a very strong broadcast on 1584 Khz of German schlager music without any announcement; what was it?

Very sad to hear about the loss of "Radio Studio X" on AM. I am questioning myself if they`ll ever come back? Why would they repair the damage which is causing high costs? Their FM signal can be received all over the Rimini area and is even covering the whole state of San Marino in good quality because of the strange but completely free frequency. I have been missing their 1584 the last couple of days while I had excellent signals on 846 (VOA News / FSN / IRRS), 1206 (AMICARADIOVENETA) and several RAI's broadcasting a copyright interruption loop due to missing football rights on medium wave and advising to tune in via other ways. Even 1350 with I AM RADIO was up with live presentation during the last few evenings. All those low power stations were shut down around midnight or a bit later.

Regarding yours 1584 AM, I suppose this to be "Antenne Domstad" from Utrecht (pronounced "Ü´_t_rech:d"). No chance to catch them in Central Europe as that pakistani station from the London area is much too strong. That LPAM brodacasting from the South Eastern parts of the Netherlands are using some 100 watts which might easily reach you. https://www.antennedomstad.nl/

What about that other 1584 from Italy listed in MWLIST, are they active at the moment or is this project already dead?

It's impossibile to know how long will be this "off air"; you can try to ask them on their Facebook page.
But everything in Radio Studio X is a little bit strange: how are they able to go on absolutely without advertising? How can they expect to be listened on one and only frequency in FM (and outside the band covered by 95% of common receivers)?

Do you have a recording of this advice? It's very strange....never knew of it!

One or two times a week, MW stations of Radio 1 broadcast some special broadcastings for blind people (while Radio 1 on Band 2 keeps on broadcasting according to common schedule).
In parallel with tv channels RaiUno or RaiDue they broadcast the audio of a tv drama with additional commentaries for who cannot watch Tv and when the tv channel broadcasts advertising, on Radio 1 you can hear music.

Many thanks to you for the suggestion, but.... the signal was very strong and nearly without fading. 100 watts don't seem enough to arrive here with a strong signal like that was.

I had listened to it in November on 1476 for the first time and last Friday I listened on that new frequency (1584 Khz).

gonna try that out, both (Free AM and that strange dutch channel). condx tow. Italy and Libya were not very good last night.
I have read about some other DXers beaming their antennas towards SSE so this polka station on 1584 might be some balkans pirate
they use hi-power indeed, heard one on 1611 the past few days (destroying Northern Star from Bergen GRRR!!!!)

yes I have a recording of that "loop announcement". it was replayed many times, but in between there was programming.
heard on several tx 900 / 999 / 1062 / 657 / 936 / 1449

gonna upload it tomorrow or so. my Italian is not very good but as far as I understand it has something to do with broadcasting / streaming rights regulations

There is some info about Italy's MW licensing changes in MWinfo today:

http://mediumwave.info/news.html

and maybe more is discussed on the WRTH fb page which I don't read.

A list of licensed versus active would be good.

I am going to try to explain for what is possible to me (I am not an insider of broadcasting, I am only a listener).

In August 2016 MISE(the Ministry for Economic Developpement) has started the procedure for the assignment of frequencies (both synchronous both asynchronous) on MW to private broadcasters on local scale.
The first step of the procedure leaded to the assignment of two frequncies only (702 khz in Campobasso and 594 Khz in Bolzano/Bozen but it seems certain that those broadcastings has never started).
A second announcement for a new assignment has been published by MISE in last spring, but the results of this assignment has never let been know and the page of MISE website on that topic has no longer been updated since April 2017: http://www.mise.gov.it/index.php/it/com ... e-medie-am

According to this Fbgroup https://www.facebook.com/NoiCheAscoltiamoLeOndeMedie/ (in whom you can find both broadcasters, both dxers), it seems that the companies to whom the asyncronous frequencies has been assigned, has been informed by MISE.
But some asyncronous frequencies hasn't assigned and the assignment of syncronous ones is not over; and so, I think that MISE will publish the list of assignments on his website when the entire procedure will be over.
Probabily (according to that group) we don't have to wait any longer for the list of autorized companies but I suppose that some companies that haven't received the licences, has presented a complaint to Administrative Court.
