Talksport nightime echo

Post by Sniffingmoose » 29 Oct 2016 12:14

Just been up on Holiday in the North or Scotland and Talksport is unlistenable due to the echo on both frequencies after dark in Inverness. 1053 is not as bad as 1089khz. The transmitters have gone out of sync with each other. I think it must be be a programme feed issue. Five Live like sounds great so the BBC can do it. Are they aware of the problem or do they think no one listens on medium wave any more. If they are not bothered, they need to think that the commercial DAB multiplex Digital One is not available over most of northern Scotland (Mount Eagle is the only TX in the Highlands) so Medium Wave is important up here.

yes getting severe echoing in recent times on 1089 at night (southern Ireland). I didn't hear an echo on 1053 (maybe there is a weak one if I listened carefully).

possibly the Scottish Talksport AM transmitters are out of synch with the English (and NI?) ones
They transmit separate Scottish ads and travel news so they would have a separate feed, however there is no good reason the common audio can't be in synch

echoing on 1089 at night (where I am) likely mainly caused by:

Recently I had tried rotating a portable radio and the echo did seem to minimise roughly with Westerglen direction off the end of the ferrite rod

It's bad here too. You'd think they would synchronise these transmissions as standard, having more than one on MW.

A very strange Echo is the one on 1035. I suppose that Northsound Two and West Sound combine at some times and West Sound are a second or so behind. They play the same music and bizarrely have the same announcements (apparently with the same announcer), but with different station names - Is it all pre-recorded or programmed in some way ? Only the ads and jingles seem to be different.

The Talksport 1089 echo is now more 'close-in' in time, compared to a few days ago when Medcon put that Youtube video up.
Still difficult to listen to, compared to echo free BBC on 909kHz (which mostly is from transmitter sites which also transmit 1089).

I made this recording of Talksport this morning from a domestic receiver around 7AM this morning (I'm in Co. Cork, Ireland) , this is from 1089kHz except between 0:40 and 1:02 where I switched over to 1053kHz (which had a 3kHz whistle from whatever American station carrier on 1050).

Quite bad multi-transmitter echoing happening once again with TalkSPORT nighttime on the 1089kHz channel, which is surely an issue in many parts of the UK, unless fairly close to a 1089kHz transmitter to be strong enough to really dominate the channel at night.

from the DX point of view this echoing on AM talk station SFNs also makes it more difficult to listen out to anything else in the background on the frequency!

Someone impress on them the need to sort it out, or is it deliberate to help push listeners to DAB etc ? !

I get the 1089 echo here too which makes it unlistenable. Maybe they don't have listeners on MW at night anyway?

Now you mention this, I'm sure that 693 or 909 (BBC 5 Live) had an echo yesterday evening too.

The echo on 909 has been around for a few days, but I can null it with a ferrite rod. Moorside Edge is the strongest one here..

The severe Talksport Echoing problems appear to be gone, I think since last Saturday

Both 1053 and 1089 have a slight echo here - just a fraction of a second. 1089 is slightly worse. Even so, both signals are quite listenable.

909 still has a severe echo. This was more apparent on my car radio in the early evening, making listening quite difficult at times.
