891: Radio 538 closing

Rumoured for a few months but now it's definite. From today they are running a "discontinued, please retune to DAB+ (etc)" loop in Dutch.

For the understandably confused, "538" is the station name and 891 is the frequency. Transmitter is in the southernmost part of the Netherlands.

Another one gone and you see low powered stations taking their place, you see it on 747 and will probably happen on 891 as well

538 was the wavelength (557kHz) of the North Sea pirate Radio Veronica, who had QSY'd there from 192m/1562kHz in 1972, and on whom the newly licensed "538" had fashioned themselves, fwiw :geek:

The irony, it seems to me, is that Radio 538's target audience must be those who were born after the ship station closed down in 1974. The number 538 surely has no historical association for them.

But anyway the station is market leader in the Netherlands, so what's in a name even when it's a number?
