1521 CRI Urumqi. Closed?

Post by John Faulkner, Skegness » 11 Sep 2016 15:18

Not heard for the last two weeks.

Asiatic conditions are starting to appear now with Taiwan, Cheju I. South Korea and Taiwan appearing in the early evening. Urumqi 1521 should definitely be present. Has this MW giant closed?

I hope not. It is the easiest MW station from the Far East to receive at my QTH, in fact the only one from my attempts so far.

I have checked my usual MW websites & I cannot see anything to suggest that they have closed. Maybe maintenance downtime hopefully.

Thanks Tim.

Maybe they have a different schedule. I am hearing other Oriental stations underneath, so that would be beneficial if they have closed. It just seems odd not to have heard it at all.

I am Tim? I must have changed my name at some point in time without noticing ;)

I have the weekend off so I will try to DX Asia for the first time since a few months ago. I am hoping CRI 1521 will still be there. The problem is with other frequencies is that they are blocked by nearby stations, so CRI was by far the easiest.

HLAZ on 1566 has been BOOMING in lately. You can't mistake this one as they say the call letters before the hour and then have those distinctive time pips:

Maybe you are Tim, we don't know you by any first name unless it says sleeper on your birth certificate ;)

I have observed 1521 kHz on five consecutive days now at and after dawn (1800-1900 UTC) and there was no trace whatsoever of either CRI Urumqi or Saudi Arabia, so it seems quite obvious that both are currently off the air. Can't be a matter of propagation in my opinion as AIR on 1071 kHz and several Iranian stations came in on all those evenings and on Monday, September 12th, even HLAZ on 1566 kHz was heard decently on my Etón E5 on its built-in ferrite antenna and also, although weaker, on the PL-880. Saudi Arabia used to be a daily catch here even on simple kitchen portables and receiving CRI on a good portable wasn't much of a problem either at this time of the year, suitable propagation conditions provided.

Last night I had Saudi quite clearly on 1440 but no sign of it on the normally stronger 1521

The medium waves are fast becoming unrecognisable as transmitters close down. So many channels are almost empty now. Saudi Arabia is a mystery. I wonder if they too have closed 1521. Aren't these big old medium wave transmitters beyond economical repair? I have heard that replacement parts are becoming difficult or impossible to source these days.

Even Saudi 1440 Saudi is down on its usual strength.

CRI 1521 could just be on a different schedule, but it would have been active this time last year. There are other CRI txs I haven't heard such as 603 Dongfang and 1269 Xuanwe. Their tell-tale interval signal would have surely been present at some point.

I think this is more than conditions.
