Return of Algeria 891

Post by Brookman Spark » 04 Mar 2016 20:44

Looks like they are back with 1kHz tone, after an absence of just over two months. The Ouled Fayet tx carried Chaîne 1 in December.

I was listening to 891 kHz this evening and I heard a very loud 1 kHz tone mixing with Radio 538. I thought that it was some kind of atmospheric noise or even noise from the car, but that's what it was! I've heard 1 kHz tones on 891 before.
It's like the sound (1 kHz heterodyne) that you would hear on a station when another station 1 kHz away is about to take over. That often happens on 1521 kHz in the background of Flame CCR or SER (Radio Castellón), when WWKB on 1520 from Buffalo, upstate NY is about to take over. :)

Yes, further tone from Algeria these past evenings after a few days' break.

Indeed when Algeria is off and after midnight UTC there is often a weak het from 890 heard on the Twente websdr. I haven't ever heard the audio on this presumed transatlantic but I'm guessing that Cuba is a likely source. Anyone care to confirm?

Hello Mr. Spark! :)

If conditions favour North America, WAMG Dedham, Massachusettes, is a possibility, or WLS Chicago, Illinois. I have only heard the latter in recent years.

Central America: Rado Progreso, Chambas is a possibility, but this one is not as regular as it was in 2005/2006.

There are several South American possibilities, none of them particularly regular. Nor is any single one more likely than another.
