Re: North Korea on medium wave

I heard the remarkable signature tune (=KCBS interval signal) clearly around 2030 UTC (=2130 CET), this time played at least four or five times (must check recording). Today, there was NO test tone before (heard and recorded it yesterday between 2014 and 2024 UTC), at least I did not recognize. After the "shout-out" station ID announcement, there was patriotic music of a male military choir again which is supposed to be the Anthem of General Kim-il Sung according to intervalsignals.net . Indeed, Egypt was very strong this time and was almost present in the back during the whole time. I stopped recording around 2034 when Egypt was getting too strong (unless my plan was to record the whole sign-on procedure which would last until 2040 or so).

You can hear the sign-on over there to compare, with that remarkable interval signal (dated back to the 70s already) and the shout-out announcement. http://intervalsignals.net/Countries/korea_north.htm
This website helped me a lot to identify my own recordings.

However, this was NOTHING compared to my today`s recording of 1730 UTC. I am not quite sure if I am gonna upload that at all, nobody will ever believe this was recorded from GERMANY. The signal was audible on a Sony cassette recorder in my kitchen downstairs on top on a fridge. this was simply unbelievable. never heard anything like that. If I am about to die now, I wont have missed anything in my life. Why keep on searching for signals any longer? Had my personal ultimate DX experience today ;) I guess there will not come any better.

The language sounds like Korean and the unique style of presentation fits to North Korea, so I think there is no reason to doubt it's them. Great catch!

I am very interested in your recording, I tried many times last night february 13th, but Egypt was just too strong overhere.

Thanks for listening to my short clip of febr 12th, yes the tone of the presenter was in north Korean style but I was not too sure so I gave no opinion whatsoever , I uploead the clip as an Unid station so I am quite happy with your opinion Senderjaeger!

It was very difficult. Thank KiwiSDR i was able to compare and i am sure. It was KCBS on 819kHz for some moment, but ERTU was all the time overwhelming.

Yes, I got him too. co/ch ERTU was quite dominant, but I was able to null their signal in the right direction for Korea and I had some short and very slight peaks of orcehstral and typical Korean chants!

Thanks for all your help, senderjaeger, You can still see DX íng is amazing and unpredictable!(and that's what makes it a great hobby)as I was also listening on febr 13 th at 1730 here at my QTH in the east of the Netherlands but did not hear anything but Egypt.

Wow! Plenty of speech in the third recording. This just isn't getting through to me. Maybe the greyline/darkness path just doesn't run in my favour at the moment.

the best recording (about 5 minutes) is still waiting to be cut out... I might have a good location towards Korea and Taiwan but no chance here for Japan, Thailand or Vietnam. and also India (which is present everywhere around me) needs lucky hands, too. Last rx. was in 2010 or so.. no success in picking up a good recording with clear ID in 2017/2018.

lets see what the sign up brings. maybe KRE comes back tonight

Thanks for sharing, I heard exactly the same at your recording of tonight 1855. Although I had a weaker signal,

Kongsfjord SDR now: 819 kHz has an excitable OM with music in the background, and some whirring sounds (?). I presume this is North Korea. The language sounds Korean.
Good DX.

yes it is. had it again today and this sound is provided by jammers used on the same site but on different frequencies, according to different sources from the far east

yes condx were pretty shitty (hey, that rhymes!) last night...

some thoughts about the "noise carrier" on DPRK's tx, this might be also a result of bad uplink quality:

https://swling.com/blog/2016/07/the-voi ... shortwave/

What I find odd is their “dirty/white noise carrier.” Let me explain: it’s noisy and I’m pretty sure it’s self induced, on purpose.
Listen to that noise that starts about 6 seconds into this clip, disappears at about 26 seconds and then comes back at 39 seconds. It disappears at 44 seconds and comes back at about 48/49 seconds. It disappears at 52 seconds and comes back at 1 minute 1 seconds
To me, when the interval signal dies out and the noise goes with it, it’s almost like this white/dirty noise carrier is caused by whatever they are using as a studio to transmitter link.
The dirty/noisy carrier is not an electrical problem. It’s an ongoing issue, likely due to a bad studio to transmitter link or a noise mixer/console left potted up when no program audio is flowing through it.
The problem with VOKs poor sound has nothing to do with a bad studio link. it has to do with the poor upkeep of it’s transmitters.
the noise you hear is the jamming signal they broadcast on various frequencies. The signal is very strong at the Kujang tx site, so it mixes with the VoK broadcasts.
however, the jammer theory seems more logical to me after all...
