Difficult to tell with only music, but I can't imagine who else this could be.

I will record MW this afternoon. I did so a couple of afternoon's ago and heard some good signals from a few South Koreans. 972 and 1566 were of course the strongest ones, and both were very clear at 1900 and 2000.

I recorded the band this afternoon. 819 kHz has two stations over 1900. One is Egypt. In all likelihood, the other is probably Radio Mazandaran from Iran. It's very weak, playing music over the hour. No Asiatic time signal appeared on the hour either.

I wonder if you had this instead of KCBS Pyongyang? The North Korean time signal is very distinctive.

Here is a recording of how KCBS came in here in 2016: https://app.box.com/s/1agtk1ekz3bkaaaqgpk5 and here's a recording of my recording next to a Scandinavian DXer's recording of KCBS 819. https://app.box.com/s/n1bjxxd1z865zug7qoo9

I think there is no reason to doubt he received North Korea. The style of music is unique and not heard anywhere else. Their time signal would appear on the bottom of the hour, by the way as NK changed their time zone to UTC+8.5 hours back in 2015 (in order to distinguish themselves from Japanese time which had been established in Korea during Japanese occupation).

Aha! I didn't know about the timezone switch. That explains why I don't hear their time signal on the hour anymore! Thanks for the info.

Just checked my half hours. No time signals heard today.

South Korea was weak on 1566 this afternoon/evening and 972 was non-existent. Poor conditions.

My pleasure. The time zone switch also affected the schedule of their external service. Nice reception and recording btw, including the national anthem after the time pips and ID.

hi there!
this was in fact a great afternoon betw. 1600 and 1830 CET or 1500 and 1730 UTC over here in GER.
before, Taiwan was already going strong on both 1557 and even better 1098 from 15:40 CET (1440 UTC)
I recorded a TOTH and a sung jingle mentioning "RTI" in english spelling

the classical music booster was back again on 819 KHZ, sometimes reaching S=3 / O=3 (but only music again ftw) on top . this came back after 1800 / 1900 but then, Egypt was too strong on the same freq.
the same music was heard on 801 and 720 khz (weaker), so it seems different DPRK px. use the same overnight loop.
I have found a recording on youtube that states the same music loop is aired every night all over the year!
those two smaller frequencies got easily swamped out by spanish or romanian channels after dark

conditions must have been excellent, I also heard:

China on 1377 - music (request?) px
Sth. Korea on 711 and 972 (first catches)

972 with olympia bulletin and typical pips but strange ID (not found on intervalsignals.net database) ...gonna upload that shortly

(but Libya was very poor that day, Iran was not heard)

gonna try again half the hour this afternoon, maybe the last chance as it gets dark later each day

very useful information bout the time zone!!!

here we go again, the North on 819 (attention! 5 min. length!!)

https://youtu.be/9bc2lIbxjPw

first part is captured from y'day, second part (shorter one) from today. not much for today, from 1700 UTC condx went down in a remarkable way.

however, this is 100% verified, I recognize the song at the end of my recording (that "ding ding ding ding - ding ding ding dong") from one of the movies found on youtube recording their signal in Japan .

and the South on 972:

https://youtu.be/zmrEgd8VnUI

usually HLCA KBS Hanminjok Bangsong 1 but ID is not understandable and not found back on interval signals database

That's just amazing. Conditions to the Far East have been better for the last couple of afternoons/early evenings, but not by much. I am definitely not hearing things as well as you. Funny how the Far East deteriorates here once November arrives - then never fully recovers until the following September.

condx were just sh... today. not even 1530 coming through clearly (and far from stable, too...)

819 could be heard for 20 mins. in total S=2 max, with some marching melody, guess this was one of the leader's anthems. announcement by female voice was not understandable . not anything like the signal the past few days.

972 gave a good signal at 1700 and 1900, this time clearly identifying as "972 Khz 1170 Khz Hanminjok Pangsong ... KBS Hanminjok" . nice recordings but the signal was gone very soon.

1557 and 1098 from TWN quite unstable

Indeed, 972 AM Dangjin is the best and easiest catch. Heard excellent signals from that 750 kW tx. between 1700 and 2000 CET always announcing their two airwaves "972 kHz 1170 kHz Hanminjok Bangsong KBS Hanminjok" followed by the remarkable time signal with four pips. Please note that there seems to be no difference between those two frequencies (any longer?). According to FMLIST, both are supposed to carry different px. but also KBS World lists only one channel for both QRGs.

If there wasn`t Sunrise LDN, this station would be audible in almost local quality. 711 with KBS Radio 1 AM from Incheon with 500 kW is much more difficult. I also noticed KBS Radio 3 AM from Hwaseong with 500 kW on 1134 kHz. However, the second Hanminjok tx. from Kimjae on 1170 AM could not be heard even during those days when Radio Capodistria from Slovenia was off.

I wonder why 1188 from Incheon carrying FEBC's HLKX px. for Seoul is difficult to catch while others like 891 Busan, 558 Yeong-il, 603 Namyang of 621 Chongjing don`t make it all the way to Europe. All of them are supposed to operate with 100 up to 500 kW power. HLAZ from Cheju-do is an excellent location. It is always audible in a good quality despite of Den Hague with only 250 kW.

Regarding the North, it depends day by day on 819. I did not succeed yesterday but heard it in good quality the day before (unfortunately, it was non-stop music only, again). On Wednesday, I recorded their time signal at 1630 GMT and 1730 GMT, the latter one followed by a patriotic anthem but the signal was far away from the best times. However, it could be identified. Maybe I am gonna upload this later. 720 and 801 carrying the same overnight programme but are not equal at daytime, are much harder to get. I failed in picking up Haeju 1080 when it was still active. The last few weeks were promising but does anyone know why this powerful tx. was closed down? It still operates several 100 kW FM frequencies.

I noticed that there is sometimes a big noise fading in with the signal of DPRK. I have read about this being described as a source from jammers operated at the same location but on different frequencies. Those seem to be pretty strong as their signal mixes with the AM audio and can be heard in Europe. Other sources state the North wont jam the South but the South is in fact interfering the North. I am not pretty much interested in SW broadcasts so 819 is always worth a try but you might fail several days and suddenly succeed. Good luck!

bwt Egypt is very annoying on 819 from 1800 CET and yesterday, the Iranian "gong" signal was heard on this channel, too. only one tx. (Kazhar Abad) is listed with 30 kW only !!! this is not very far away from the capital of Tehran (frequent catch) and is located near the caspian Sea.

I tried last night, but a hour later, 2130 UTC. There was a station underneath co/ch Egypt. Too weak to identify. There was one postion of the antenna(loop) where I could null the Egypt signal, but later on Egypt was dominant all over. I made some recordings with my Phone, I'll include one. But I post it without any comment on what I hear as I can say nothing about the language I hear, it is a 37 second clip. It could be Egypt, Iran, etc I believe North Korea has mostly music.
So the clip is on 819 Khz, recorded on Febr 12th 2018 2140 UTC . Ofcourse I'll try later tonight. Any thoughts on this will be appreciated.
