Far, far East - Taiwan and Korea on medium wave

Post by PFM907 » 19 Jan 2018 08:24

Hello everybody.
Heard those ones y’day on my crappy portables without any add. antenna (!!!) between 1600 and 1700 UTC after three lousy days wth absolutely none conditions:

1098 and 1557 = RTI Int. in Chinese, Kouhu township - jingle ID. (both up with the same talk programme! current affairs, culture, listeners call-in, language learning lesson, no musical px as listed on AMLIST. I was hoping for "RTI`s Ilovemusic" channel anyway...), switch off around 1806 CET (1706 UTC)
1557 almost free, only few times Smooth Radio (or similar) popping up in the back
1098 weaker but clearly identified in the 0 of Slovakia at several time

1566 FEBC Corea, Cheju with Russian Service // cc Den Haag but still audible in a very good way, switch off at 1800 CET (1700 UTC) exactly

Never experienced any signal like that from the Far East! It almost reached "Poro point" level on former 1170.
I have caught Taiwan once, but this was at least 5 years ago on 1557 when it was still carrying Family Radio.

Conditions must have been AWESOME! However, "People's Democratic Socialist Republic of Northern Corea" is still missing on medium wave over here so far. :?
Anyone heard them in the past two years or so? According to Radio1 media and mediumwave.info, they suffer from modulation problems on most sites.

Nice signal from HLAZ!

All these stations have been missing from here for the last few weeks. The same thing happened last season. September/October are the best months for Asia. I will have a listen for Asia this afternoon.

Poro Point was never an easy catch for me because of all the UK locals on 1170. I heard it a few times though, OVER the top of them! 1170 is much quieter since I moved to the east coast and I occasionally hear HLSR on there.

I have only heard one North Korean on MW and that was KCBS Chosun Jungang Pangsong from Pyongyang in 2015. It's time signal is a giveaway, but I have not heard it since. I think a few other North Koreans got through here last October, but only at 'time signal level'.

Some respectable Oriental DX coming in here this afternoon.

972 HLCA
1134 HLKC
1170 HLSR
1566 HLAZ

1134 and 1170 are presumed as noise levels were overriding the vocals.

Time was 1800. 1600 and 1700 were totally noised out. 1500 had Taiwan at fair levels on 1557.

And I can just hear Vietnam on 1242 under a reduced Absolute.

Best chance for NK has been their 1kHz tone on 819 from 2015 to 2025. If it's audible under Cairo then it can be worth hanging on for prog content later which almost always includes some of that 2 x female choral pop at around 2100.

Their carrier can be offset so the tone will be too of course. 818.9 this afternoon as heard on regional receivers.

Before tone starts and in order to fill an otherwise blank carrier they use a ping-pong filler reminding me of some 1980s computer game. Can't think of a better way to describe it. But I have never caught that despite its distinctive pattern. Nor have I heard the differently distinctive jamming from South Korea. It's a distorted speech sample repeated over and over. It's so useful having those regional receivers available to check what might make it all the way to us.
