918 kHz. since Slovenia left

Post by John Faulkner, Skegness » 06 Sep 2017 15:44

This was how 918 was looking/sounding around 1900 yesterday evening: https://youtu.be/Q58lJA5mPBo

The music at the beginning sounds Oriental. Then I presume that's Iran taking over towards the end. There might be an ID there but I'm uncertain.

Unknown jingle at 19:01:18.

My flag was pointing north-east at this time, but with an aurora forecast for this evening, I will be beaming south, looking for Africa.

Good DX!

Hi John,

Your 3m21sec has the Farsi ID "Inja... " (This is... ) but the next words aren't "Radio Kerman" as far as I can tell. I wish they were, then life would be simpler.

The other audio including the music at the beginning is surely Ethiopia with that shuffle beat that always points to East Africa. If there is a third audio, sorry no idea!

Checking 918 at 1900 today via a remote in northern Norway it's the same struggle of Farsi language v Ethiopia.

Very interesting recording, John! The music in the beginning sounds Ethiopian to me as well and I also agree with Brookman Spark that there is a Farsi "Inja..." ID at 3:23 and the next words aren't "Radio Kerman". I'm neither sure what language the lady heard just before that ID is speaking nor whether it's the same station.

Thank you Brookman and Matthias.

Maybe I was wrong about the music at the beginning being Chinese. Or maybe Ethiopia's offset has moved. I am unsure.

Two days ago, Mauno on the MW Offsets list reported Ethiopia as being on on 917.994. Shandong, the strongest station on 918 with Mauno, is on 917.995 - where I have my (I thought) Chinese music. If this is Ethiopia then they have drifted. Iran was reported on 917.996 - where the Farsi "Inja" would be.

I pointed my flag towards East Africa this evening and will check my recordings shortly.

Thanks again.

I've been looking at 918 khz for the past few nights and what I have been seeing is :-

918.0016 - Spain - Pest !
917.9950 - something here when Ethiopia disappears at 2000. there at various levels until about 0150, but no audio heard.
917.9945 - Presumed Ethiopia - Seemingly continuous music at 18:55 onwards. Sign on theme tune at 02:53 onwards. Strong at times
917.9915 - Egypt - Gets strongest after 00:00 - Parallel with 819

Difficult to hear anything on 918 recently as noise has settled there. I'm fairly sure I've heard Dimtsi Wegahta a few times, but nothing in the way of IDs. The music seems to give it away. Carriers visible yesterday evening at 2000 were

917.9914
917.9941
917.9950
917.9955
819.0010

I tend to use Absolute 1242 as my frequency reference. If I use BBC 693 or 909 then I have to adjust downwards by 0.0001, so seems pretty accurate.

Mauno's recently posted offsets for 918.

917.991 EGY
917.994 ETH Dimtse Wegahta -2000*
917.995 CHN strongest Shandong tx? + many weak carriers
917.996 IRN
918.001 E
918.008 also Shandong *2007-

Absolutely nothing on 918.008 here.

Is 1242 stronger than 1215 with you?

Yes. Much stronger. It's supposedly the local relay. Tx is just west of Boston, so about 20+ miles-ish.

Another one revealed by the lack of Slovenia :)

I have to thank Christoph Ratzer for logging to MWLIST. I wouldn't have spotted it without that.

Perfect, Simon! AIR is also good (in Salzburg) around 1700/1740 UT, now the strongest station from India beside 1071. But my special focus is another station from South Asia on 918...

Yes. Thanks again Christoph. Any Asian is a bonus here, fighting through all the UK locals and the rest of Europe.
I think that John is on the lookout for the other one as well !

The other one...

Cambodia with chanting shortly after their 2200 sign-on this evening and heard under Spain on the U Twente remote receiver. At 18sec I switched to the south China receiver to compare the more strongly received signal.

Maybe an early warning for your own receivers regarding this evening's signals: many Asians heard well on the Arctic Norway remote receiver just now.

So Cambodia 918 again. It's due back at 2200UTC, not 2230 as given at MWlist.
Also Taiwan on 1143 but not Japan 1134. Chinese but not Taiwan on 1557.
Several Indias.
Bangla Betar 693 was a particularly strong.

Thanks for the tips.

I had a look for Cambodia on 819 last night, but not even a carrier. The middle of MW band is suffering constant noise now, so anything on 890-1100 will be very difficult.

Agreed with poor Asia sigs yesterday John. Cambodia was even poor on the south China receiver!
