Hello everyone

Post by MAHA87 »

Hi everyone, I'm Mark from Edinburgh. I'm very new to the world of radio and DX'ing - and am currently enjoying spending my pre-bedtime hour or so scanning the shortwave band hoping to stumble upon something interesting from somewhere interesting. I bought myself a couple of little portables, a RADIWOW R-108 and an XHDATA D-328 to get started listening. Both of which I'm enjoying immensely.

Cheers :D

Hello Mark, I am not a huge shortwaves fan but I am happy to read that there are always some new enthousiasts for our hobby.

Hello Mark. A very warm welcome! I hope you enjoy Skywaves. We're a friendly bunch, so don't be afraid to ask any questions if there's anything you need to know.

Do you listen 'barefoot'? i.e. only with the telescopic antenna? Or do you hook up the receivers to an external antenna?

Hey John,

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Yeah so it's just the telescopic antenna that I'm using at the moment - although there was a longer cable that was included with the RADIWOW to be plugged into the receiver, and I'm guessing to maybe go out of the window?!

Thanks!
Mark

You should find that the longer cable will improve signals and probably drag in weaker stuff you wouldn't otherwise hear. That's the theory anyway. I had a Roberts Stream 83i which had FM. It was deaf on FM, but plugging in my rooftop FM antenna used to boost signals tremendously.

Hi Nick,

Thanks very much.

I've enjoyed listening in to China Radio International tonight on 9570 KHz from Urumqi Hutubi and also some weak news and music signals reaching my portable antenna from Kuwait on 9685.

Cheers,
Mark.

Hi Mark,
¡Bienvenido! to this forum!

I am more on the VHF BandII and MW side of the hobby but I enjoy very much listening to SW from time to time.

I love 'Alba' and I spent long periods there, mainly around the Cairngorms, Invernesshire and Isle of Skye! Outstanding country!

Hi Jorge,

I do a lot of hillwalking in the Cairngorms, I've been up there today in fact climbing two 'munro's' (Scottish mountains over 3000ft) - I apologise if you knew this already!!
Thanks for introducing yourself - pleasure to speak with you :)

Mark.
