Hi from North London

Post by KnobTwiddler » 22 May 2018 01:12

Hello everyone I'm KnobTwiddler, I have been interested in radio for 60 years. For the past 14 years I've been on DS, but DS is not as good as it used to be so I finally got around to registering on Skywaves.

I'm a boring 69 year old fart living in North London. I love radio and have been a licensed Radio Amateur for the past 31 years (although not very active these days). I just love all things radio like MW and SW listening and monitoring the 2 mtr Amateur Band and dxing on the FM band.
In the 70's and 80's I used to do UHF Tv dxing and a bit of Band 1 and Band 3 dxing as well, but I kinda lost interest in that side of the hobby.

Well my spelling is rubbish (praise be to the spell checker), my grammar is rubbish, my typing is rubbish and I'll probably bore you all to sleep...don't say I didn't warn you.

Regards to all, KnobTwiddler.

Hi Chris - DS is Digital Spy forums, it's not really netiquette to post direct links to rival forums so http://lmgtfy.com/?q=https://forums.digitalspy.com/

Welcome Twiddles!

Don't think DS is rival to Skywaves though - we don't have a Coronation Street forum for one thing...

Digital Spy has been good to us, feeding a few members to us over the years.

If anybody wants to post about Coronation Street, we have the Off Topic forum. I'm looking forward to Pat Phelan coming back into it. I mean, poor Eileen. Oooh! It's all happening on the Street!

John, the last time I watched Coronation Street, it was in monochrome and on 405 lines Tv on Ch9 from the Croydon transmitter in London.
I can remember Ena Sharples, Martha Longhurst and Minnie Caldwell having a milk stout in the snug of the the Rovers Return...but I can't remember what I had for Breakfast this morning.

As for East Enders, I have never watched a single episode of that programme. :?

 Oh, I shouldn't laugh, but I am in exactly the same boat at 57. Yes - I can remember Ena and Minnie. I don't recall Martha though. I don't think I am losing the plot just yet Arthur, but I can be very forgetful these days. If only they'd bring back the test card and music. (What's breakfast?)

Martha was the one with the beret and the glasses. She spent her final earthly moments in the Rovers Return.

But what was the name of Minnie Caldwell's cat? No looking it up!

I have to admit that I don't remember Minnie Caldwell's pussy, but I bet you had to look it up.

I do though remember Mrs Slocombe's pussy, it was 'Tiddles'. :geek:

I do indeed, though I don't know that particular test card. I occasionally reminisce over these kind of things. Some happy memories, vaguely being off school due to illness or something and being able to watch schools programmes at home. Seeing those test cards and trade test transmissions, engineering info, etc. They all seem to be on YouTube these days. But I still haven't found the one about the design of oil tankers. !!

Oooh the memories I do remember the old test cards never saw Croydon as ch 9 was Granada here but could receive other regions ATV Midlands/HTV/Yorkshire meaning we had multi channels TV back in the 60s.

Anyway welcome to the forum.

After looking at all those test cards, I came across this. A genius I had completely forgotten about.

Brilliant p**s take! I've never watched any Victor Lewis-Smith... why did I miss this when it was on.
