Sept 2003 and 2004 Tropo Ducting

Post by daveB » 09 Feb 2018 13:08

Has anyone else kept their TVDX logs from Sept 2003 and 2004. At that time my DXing was very casual. The aerial was a Triax BB flat panel and a Maxview UHF preamp standing on the loft floor. I came across a couple of handwritten A4 sheets within the page of a large atlas a little while back.

From 14th to 18th Sept 2003 I logged numerous Danish TV stations each day - mostly early morning and after sunset thru to late evening. The highlight was on 17th at 1900 when Norway TV2 was received - clear enough to see the adverts showing .no for the internet suffix. Some channels reached P5 quality. The 'usual' Dutch stations were weak. I also logged a couple oman stations

Almost a year later - on 7th Sept 2004 I logged another major opening - with Denmark on 22, 27, 30, 34, and 48. Numerous German stations were logged - as far as 824 km (ZDF Ch 31). My notes also show that I got NDR on Ch 60 from Niebull (670 km) which was listed at 20 watts, ADR on Ch29 which only had lower power txs listed - and possibly also Niebull. This was basically a coastal duct all the way to Denmark.
SDRPlay, AirSpyMini, RTL dongles, SB920s, Yamaha TX930. 5 ele compact yagi on rotator at 18ft agl. FM5 facing east, FM5 facing south, FM3 facing NE, OIRT dipole, 3-ele Moxon vertical facing east.

Loggng Oman in Kent on UHF takes some doing. I logged it in Pakistan in 2003.

I remember that time. Had DR1 from Danmark on several channels (CHs.03/04/05/06/07/08/09/11/31), also DR2 (which was only using low power tx.) on CH.10. TV2 was on CH.22+32 (Fyn), CHs.23/48/52/58 (East), CHs.27/30/33 (Syd), CH.53 (KBH) and ?? Nibe (Nord). TV Danmark (later SBS Net, 6'eren, Kanal 4) could be seen on CHs.35/38/43/44/49/60. I only had Sweden twice, on VHF CH.07 (SVT1) and UHF CH.45 (TV4 Sverige) from Halmstad. I have QSLs for SVT1, DR1+2 and all the local TV2`s (except Lorry who are located right in the Copenhagen central train station but never did reply. From SBS Nordic, I got a basecap of Kanal 4 and two magnets of 6'eren. ARD on ch.29 was certainly my tx. Schwerin operating with NDR TV. This is a local px. of ARD (but not =Das Erste) which relays certain shows like Tagesschau main evening news bulletin. I miss analogue TV. I spent a thousand nights watching danish TV with movies in original languages and subtitles. When the weather was good, those could be seen in colour with a simple copper wire connected to an early 90's no-name TV. Never seen Norway on UHF, but Norway is my personal record twice (most far-away RDS log on FM / VHF-2 and most far-away DAB / Band III). Now, analogue TV is dead and FM too. Good old days...
