Cannock Chase Radio

Post by Julian Hardstone » 18 Dec 2017 23:23

After a year or more of streaming, Cannock Chase Radio has been granted a Community Radio license, two in fact: 89.6 and 94.0, "launching early in 2018"

Andy and Tim will lose a few dx regulars :(

You can see the chase from Telford, so I expect big signals here.

Andy.

Oh no It will blocking 2 Irish RTE Mount Leinster frequencies for me unless its very week. I can see Cannock Chase on a clear day from my front window. There is also a strong weekend pirate in Staffordshire that uses 89.7

Its now a very crowded band in the midlands with community stations and pirates filling the gaps to contend with. Not sure what the transmitter sites are going to be but I wonder if they are having two TXs to cover both sides of Cannock Chase. The smallest lift brings signals from RTE Mount Leinister to Burton on Trent. RTE 94.0 and 89.6 is even receivable on the car radio most days if you are west of the River Trent.

Cannock Chase is a great place to DX from. I know the area a little as I have relatives in that area. Ireland could be a big signal under tropo conditions and is easily available on-demand around there. So nice of them to choose 89.6 and 94.0. Surely they could stick up some more relays on 91.8, 99.2, 101.4, etc. Or are those frequencies already lost in the Midlands?

101.4 is lost b/c smooth

99.2 is lost in cannock and the east mids by hermitage

91.8 is useful window for Holland/Ireland

It will be interesting when summer comes and the new stations listeners complain about Gaelic music wiping out 94!

Not that I could suggest a better freq without extending the band.

I doubt it will cause problems for Andy, I predict I will need flat or worse than flat condx to null Ireland and hear it

R4 Taco 94.1 can get pretty pokey too, its a permanent signal and only needs a whiff of tropo to lift it... so could cause problems up on the chase.
