Upcoming RSLs

Post by Andrew Webster,Wigan » 13 Jun 2015 21:41

It's Ramadan time and that means loads of RSLs for a month but a few changes this year as last year we had one from Manchester which very strong this however on 87.7 it's Stoke On Trent,Preston and Bradford.
I don't remember having one from Stoke but the Preston one is usually on 87.9.

87.7 FM - Preston
Ramadan Broadcast
On Air From: 19-06-2015
to : 17-07-2015

87.7 FM - Stoke on Trent
Ramadan Broadcast
On Air From: 18-06-2015
to : 19-07-2015

87.7 FM - Bradford
Broadcast for Ramadhan
On Air From: 18-06-2015
to : 18-07-2015

87.9 FM - Oldham
Broadcast for Ramadhan
On Air From: 16-06-2015
to : 17-07-2015

87.9 FM - Accrington, Lancashire
Broadcast for Ramadan
On Air From: 17-06-2015
to : 17-07-2015

I have heard one of the 87.9 one testing and is strong but that's no problem here with Feart being on 88.0 as of yet I have not heard the 87.7 ones testing yet.
So we will find out how it affects us up here this coming week so if you hear someone scream you know it's bad

You know I have to put up with BSB Radio from Snetterton for next weekend, so it's goodbye to Sporadic-E and meteor scatter at the usually clean bottom of the band. Considering my close proximity to Snetterton (when the racing cars can be heard from my garden, and inside the house when the windows are open), it is likely that BSB Radio (which is an RSL on 87.7) will bleed onto 87.9, where meteor scatters can be heard often, of which I once got France Culture from Parthenay.
Getting a phaser could save me from the RSL so I can hear meteor scatters on 87.7, along with troposcatter from Radio 10 in Lelystad which can be received easily in vertical. That phaser could help me with Tacolneston, particularly on the XDR which has automatic gain control, hence it desensitises.

Well at least it's only a couple of days but you will be surprised how Es stamp all over the RSL they do here but it's listening for weak signals that's the problem.

If a 1kW station from Bosnia can walk all over Belmont, you can easily lose a piddling little signal from Snetterton. :)

Well the results are in The Stoke RSL started Weds night although officially it should have started at midnight along with Bradford the Preston one started today.
Now how do I receive them well only Stoke 87.7 is receivable on the vertical FM 5 a noisy mono nothing on The horizontal FM 5 or the homebrew FM 3 the vertical FM 3 beaming at Ireland just about receives Stoke.
Can't hear Preston/Bradford at all and I have rotated 360 degrees and only Stoke can be heard.

I can hear 87.9 RSLs but they are weak but last nights Es saw them all off so very good news and no need to scream
I am so glad it wasn't like last year so all's good.

Thanks very much for saying that. The Snetterton signal is on now. Here is the RDS info:

PI: C595, PS: BSBRADIO, PTY: Sport (4), no RT.

When I point in my usual direction, the signal is around 37 dB. Considering how difficult it is for SpE (and tropo in particular) stations to walk over SHC stations, I doubt I could get anything. I wouldn't worry because the RSL is only on for the weekend, and I love superbike races so I could enjoy seeing how far it goes listening to the race. I remember doing that when there was a lift last year, BSB Radio ran out near the Mulbarton turnoff on the A11 (actually nearer to Wymondham than Mulbarton), and by the Ketteringham turnoff (also on the A11) near the Thickthorn Interchange it got knocked out by Lelystad. I could tell it was tropo, because that day Lelystad 87.7 was strong and stable with RDS over in Great Yarmouth, as opposed to the usual fluttery scatter signal.

That's nothing Alex. 37dB may be a decent and listenable signal, but Italy and Spain have been booming in here at S9+50dB at times. Minus the 20dB pre-amp, that's still S9+30dB. In XDR-F1HD terms that's about 70dB (minus the 20dB pre-amp = 50dB).

I must try some RSL DXing again before I lower the 9.2. I don't hear many in this part of the world. Sheffield's Radio Ramadan was probably one of the best catches, but it was a VERY weak signal. In fact you can see the total number of RSLs I have heard here on my page at http://www.g1vvp.co.uk/fm-log-tropo-skegness.php

Last night I noticed the Oldham RSL reception was much increased from the afternoon so I wonder if they have turned the wick up.
Anyway Es just sees them off so not a problem.

At least the Snetterton RSL is off now. Earlier today, could still hear a meteor scatter on 87.9 despite the RSL on 87.7.

I had a good look around 87.7 and 87.9 this afternoon to see if I could hear any RSLs and I didn't hear a single one. I was also hoping to listen before I lowered the aerial, but the gusty winds we had today saw the antenna swaying more than I like to see, so all listening was done with the aerial fully lowered, i.e. at its lowest listening height. Scatter is still the same strength.

I missed that. :(
I don't think it would get as far as Breckland anyway.

It was, until now! MSV Radio starts tomorrow from Snetterton, again on 87.7 FM. It appears that both BSB Radio and MSV Radio transmit yearly. Last year, MSV Radio was in mono, and I seem to remember it had TP.
