Malmö Turning Torso Private Residence

Code: Select all

Turning torso - Lilla Varvsgatan 14, 211 15 Malmö
107,4 MHz	Retro FM Skåne 0,050	v
From this 1 very small dipol aerial in the left corner, which is located in vertical position on top of the tower, the fill-up frequency of M1 network Skåne län is provided directional towards the city centre. The main frequency is 107,0 Lund- Universitetssjukhuset with 1000 watts. In the middle of the tower's top, the link reception antenna for 107,0 Lund is visible that is picking up the strong signal and relays it to the broadcast aerial for further coverage of the town.

Malmö Limhamn

Code: Select all

Limhamns värmeverk - Packhusgatan 2, 216 13 Limhamn-Bunkeflo
105,2 MHz	NRJ Energy 5,000	v
106,1 MHz	106,1 RIX FM Malmö 5,000	v
106,7 MHz	MIX MEGAPOL Malmö och Lund 2,500	v

Kanal 12B	Sveriges Radio DAB 1,000	v

today, you can find the following situation on this chimney of the thermal power plant:

-3 dipol aerial system, verical on top, directional towards Lund --> in use for 105,2 NRJ and 106,7 Megapol (before: Rix FM)
-2 dipol aerial system, vertical but lower, directional towards city centre --> in use for 106,1 RIx FM (before: Rockklassiker)
-vertical DAB antenna, directional towards Ystad / Trelleborg --> in use for ch. 12 B with 1 kW

older pictures show the changes over the years as the chimney only contains of empty mounts but no antenna at all:
https://www.fotosidan.se/blogs/dubbelol ... ftverk.htm (2014, external)
https://sv.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fil:Lim ... s_2014.jpg (2014, external)

as you can see, in 2014 were only the antenna mounts prepared to be used, but no FM signal was transmit from here then.

two more photographs,

the first is a proof that 106,1 MHz is not provided from Turning Torso as it gives not full signal and no stereo in sight of Turning Torso.
as this frequency has a bit of a problem to reach the city centre, this is for sure coming from the lower aerial system at Limhamn thermal power plant's chimney.

at last, a view of Malmö, as seen from the Öresundbron

Since I know the guy who made the antenna installations on the Malmö Turning Torso building, I have some additional info.
Due to architectural reasons, the tx antenna had to be made as little visible as possible.
It consists of two stacked vertical folded dipoles, each fed by a coax balun, and mounted with a reflector grid made of wires.
The reflector grid is oriented to suppress the signal towards Denmark.
Since there was a requirement from Denmark to locally use the same frequency(!) as used from the Turning Torso building, the signal in that direction had to be suppressed by >40 dB! This was accomplished by adding a small 3 element yagi pointing towards Denmark and fed out of phase...

Hej, thanks for your contribution - indeed very interesting and useful information, that is highly appreciated.
It's true, 107.4 is also used from Kongens Lyngby with 25 w, but 105.9 Rødovre or 106.9 Taastrup is even worse.
Sweden is now even interfering itself by using 104.8 from Lund with RIX FM Malmö against 104.7 Guldkanalen.
The new danish frequency plan with lots of new low-power stations and now also Sweden has made it difficult.

I can imagine, that the designers and owners did not want anyone to see a huge antenna system upon the roof.
As the whole building is private residence, you also need permission to access, this is no official outlook tower.

Still I wonder, why this location has been chosen. It is not that high, there would have been space at Limhamn.
Or they could have been used this 50 watts frequency from Kronprinsen, where the Närradio is in transmission.
I also remember a former 92.6 FM frequency from Kanalgatan, before Mix Megapol went to 107.0 + 107.4 MHz.

Do you know if 106.1 MHz was really in use at Turning Torso before? In the past, it has been active from Lund.

Furthermore, I wonder how many different versions of RIX FM and Megapol you are able to pick up at your qth?
Did you ever record any of those beautiful, different frequency jingles before the major changes on August 1st?
I wanted to collect as much of them, as possible but it is almost impossible to receive anything North of Malmö.

It is really hard to pick up local radio (now: national commercial) from Sweden, even at my excellent dx location.
I have been able to receive low power from Göteborg, Halmstad and Varberg, but I was really working hard on it.
Over the years, I have experienced that directional aerial systems with only few watts towards DE are common.

Well, there are several cases of bad frequency planning, in Denmark as well as in Sweden, when using lots of low power stations occupying many frequencies. This makes life difficult for some of us listening to German Stations, e.g. the new stations on 100.3, 104.8, and 105.8. You really need an antenna with good directional properties and good F/B!

The Turning Torso building may not be very high when comparing with bigger tx masts like Hörby and Halmstad, but it is much higher than the surrounding landscape, also if you compare with the short Malmö/Jägersro tower, which is a story of its own... There are two transmitters installed at Turning Torso, both from Elenos. 106.1 was previously used by Rock-klassiker.

For local dxers in southern Sweden, RIX FM and Megapol are mostly considered as a frequency occupying nuisance, obstructing the reception of more distant stations. German stations typically put out a much better sound quality, e.g. RSH on 100.2 from Bungsberg and most frequencies from the Rostock mast with its new Rohde & Schwarz transmitters.

In Helsingborg, all frequencies will be transferred to the new tower at Olympia, then the old tower will be dismantled. At the new tower, the FM tx antennas are vertical, while the old one has horizontal antennas.

At Malmö/Jägersro, when refurbishing the antennas some years ago, there was a transition from horizontal to circular polarization.

This is very surprising and astonishing to hear. I have experienced the interest in German radio few times, before in Scandinavia. Many Danes e.g. have taken quite an effort with amazing constructions during the 90s to pick up NDR, Antenne MV, Ostseewelle, RSH, FFN, Radio Hamburg and Delta Radio at their location in Jutland and Funen and relay them into their own local cable network ("Fællesantenne" or "Antenneforening"). There were places up to Esbjerg and Aarhus, where you could find NDR 1, 2 and 3 plus several private stations before Yousee have "lukket" the analogue cable. Especially RSH (ever since they started in '86) and N-Joy were extremely popular for decades in Danmark. I don't know, if there are any such cable initiatives in Scania / Sth. Sweden, but people from there seem to be keen on catching German FM-radio with large aerial systems.

Such effort is highly appreciated from within the technical point-of-view, but I still keep on wondering when it comes to the content: Why are DXers in Sweden (in fact, they are in Denmark, as well) so fascinated by German (commercial) radio? Of course, they sound very professional and have a huge coverage. Plus they were available at a time (in Denmark before 88, in Sweden before 93), when there was no officially legalized and acknowledged independent commercial radio in Northern Europe, excluding some parties or church and few hobby stations. But German FM radiomodulation is quite low with flat audio. Even the 100.000 watts frequencies are easily swamped-out during high pressure when the loud and heavily-modulated local stations from SE and DK show up (which are, of course, far from powerful regarding their radiation).

I have experienced tropo in Gedser, when I reached hr3, MDR 1 Radio Sachsen, MDR 1 Radio Thüringen and lots of smaller Berlin frequencies easily on a portable receiver. The same on Rügen, it was no big deal crossing 500 kilometres or more into Poland or Saxony with a 3-element. But times have changed and today, the musical selection on NDR 2 or RSH does not at all differ from the commercial radio stations like Megapol or Nova. In fact, THE VOICE is a better Urban Contemporary than N-JOY. P4 plays a wider-spread selection than Welle Nord or Radio MV. Furthermore, the danish and swedish stations add new music to their play-lists faster than Germans do and their Hot AC or CHR style runs with much more drive than our AC like FFN, Antenne MV, RSH or Mainstream CHR like Delta. That is why I enjoy Nordic radio more.

By the way, both - Danmarks P3 and Sveriges P3 have passed a negative development. Both are currently airing chart hit music and Top 30 all over again during daytime with lots of blablabla and live sports coverage. Their music was much better about 10 or 15 years ago, when NRK Petre was already mainstream. But the evening schedule of P3 is still worth tuning in. At least they have more live presentation than e.g. RSH has or 106,8 Hamburg (100% pre-produced on Sundays).
