German tropo 16 Oct 2017

Post by daveB » 17 Oct 2017 15:34

Tropo to Germany has been very lively from my location for the last few hours - with ducting tending to follow the weather front and matching F5LEN's forecast. The best distance was early on at 906 km from Garz on 102.5 (NDR1 MV) with strong signals closer in peaking around 1200-1300 UTC although even now (14:30 UTC) Brocken is giving full RDS on 91.5 from MDR Jump - so it is by no means over.
SDRPlay, AirSpyMini, RTL dongles, SB920s, Yamaha TX930. 5 ele compact yagi on rotator at 18ft agl. FM5 facing east, FM5 facing south, FM3 facing NE, OIRT dipole, 3-ele Moxon vertical facing east.

Interesting Dave. No tropo here, but German and Dutch scatter has been very good. Nothing stable at all. Fluttery, weak, etc. but lots of it.

Edit: Actually, some of it is reaching RDS.

It has been a pretty good week, I was on holidays myself, visiting the Inselsberg transmitter site a.o.

Been testing my "new" grundig satellit 650 which I bought the other week. One of the nice surprises was RTBV Vivacité , apparently from the Tx site Bouillon, 250 km for a 1 Kw tx. I heard them twice.
Sometimes remarkable. For instance I receive the RTBF Vivacite transmitter on 92,3 in Charleroi 50 Kw, 228 km 50 Kw about 3-4 times a week. It is widely heard in Holland.

General: Grundig satellit 650, Lowe HF-225, Tecsun PL660
FM; Degen De1103
DAB: Akai ADB10(2x), Nikkei ADB10, Technisat.
All with telescope antenna. I use a home-built(not by myself, :D ) Loopantenna on the satellit for mediumwave
