Solar Activity - Storm warning

Post by daveB » 16 Jul 2017 09:28

In case no one else has picked up the info - a Coronal Mass was ejected from the sun on 14 Jul 2017 which will impact the earth at around 1600 UTC Sunday 16 Jul 2017. A G2 moderate storm is forecast - maybe we'll get an aurora and some auroral Es and maybe it will kick start some SpE.

I hope so as there has been no SpE in the UK for six out of the last eight days and those other two days it was minimal. My last reception was on 06 Jul 2017

I've been following this. There has been a moderate impact this morning according to the NOAA http://www.swpc.noaa.gov/products/planetary-k-index It will be interesting to see if this gets any bigger.

DXLC reports "The geomagnetic field is expected to be quiet to major storm on July 16-17 due to CME effects and quiet to unsettled on July 18." and so attributes this to a coronal mass ejection. http://www.solen.info/solar/

This could be timed just right as I plan to set up an African directed flag this evening, band noise permitting.

The sun is certainly quietening down a lot lately and levels of geomagnetic activity are currently not that much greater to that experienced around the solar minima of 1997 and 2008. http://www.solen.info/solar/images/comp ... cycles.png West coast MW DX was in abundance back then, particularly in 2008.

Praying for no noise!
