2017 - ES season's already over?

Post by PFM907 » 07 Jul 2017 19:48

haven't had one single log for about a week now, also the listings look rather poor since the beginning of July.
after a quite late start at the end of May and three excellent weeks with personal best-logs, it seems all-over.

Here in the UK there was a lift yesterday, between 17-18 UTC (lasting for about 45 minutes) with Italian and Balkan stations, but that's it since 22 June I believe? I was expecting something rather today, after a quite humid day, but just some very weak tropo signals. Let's hope it's not all over!

Here in France that's seems to be the same case... The last ES station I could (*) fully tuned here (RDS + Audiorecord) was Radio Zoo (GR) on 90.8 MHz from Thessaloniki/Hortiatis-2 on 20th June at 19:05 CEST... since that, good tropo signals, but no ES...

(*) and was at home and available for that...

It's definitely been much sparser since around June 21st, with openings much fewer and further between. However, since then my logs show openings on the 23rd (Spain, Portugal, Morocco), 24th (morning Balkans, later Spain, France, Italy (Sardinia), a few dregs from Portugal, Greece and then Finland/Estonia in the evening), 25th (Balkans, Tunisia, Bulgaria), 26th (Balkans, Italy, Greece, Tunisia, Spain, Morocco, Algeria), 1st July (Tunisia, Algeria), 2nd July (Morocco, Portugal, Spain), 4th July (Sweden, but blink and you'll have missed it), 5th July (Algeria, also very brief) and 6th July (Italy, Balkans). I know I have missed one or two openings since being back at work from June 27th.

I'm sure there will be more big openings before the end of the season in late August but I am pretty sure that the amazing spell in June will turn out to be THE bumper crop of the season.
Good DX.

Apart from a reasonable Balkans opening on the 6th and a few other minor bits and pieces, its been a similar story here in the Midlands over the last 2 weeks... very disappointing. Yes there is time yet for some good openings but my gut feeling is that this season has already peaked and it will prove to be a short one.

Did it used to be better in Scotland for Band 2 Es David or are these lean years more recently part of a new trend?

no not really u guys down there have a much earlier start ie sometimes our season doesn't start till middle end june up here and most of the time if you look at the map if there is intense Es in england its all bright red lines but up here you notice there is next to no lines coming from Scotland and yes there is a few b2 dxers up here its just we dont get the openings , also there is the distance factor ie the double hop openings you get down there is well over two hops up here that comes into it a wee bit too , even on 6m loads of my mates and some hams i know have given up the band due to complete boredom due to lack of openings and unless you can get a huge tower by the sea you might have a chance , David

Hi all
I think i must tell it... Yesterday (July 09th) I listened to several stations from the British Isles. I could only identify a station (90.30 Mhz, BBC Radio 3, North Hessary Tor). See: http://www.fmlist.org/fm_logmap.php?dat ... 7&band=ALL
i have all summer waiting to hear England, Is the first time in this season, and the second time in my life. Were several short but intense flashes. Today I return to my special listening area but there was no luck. If there is any news I will inform.
Best regards

A friend of mine, who was in Argentat (Center of France), reported that yesterday at 11 h 30 CEST there was an ES opening from Maghreb, during one hour... 2017 ES season seems not to be fully over 8-)

heard 3 stations today (87.9 FM / 88.0 FM / 88.9 FM)
also heard 2 stations yesterday (87.9 FM / 88.0 FM) :(

very poor. I never experienced any July like this before (June was excellent, however) ever since writing down my logs would have been 20 years or so
