Peter has re-located to Botswana for three months

Post by pe1etr » 05 Feb 2020 09:59

Just got internet access today.
There are actually several FM stations in my rural location at portable radio strength. Some of them have RDS. I have 360 deg take-off for a change :)
FM aerials are not available locally, but I bought a ring dipole and two 83cm telescopic car radio aerials with me and will fix them above the roof on metal poles.

It's maybe a little late for Austral Es season, but is it the right time for TEP?

There is usually little or none Es here.
A bit early for TEP.

Some MW bandscans would be great to see Peter. Sounds like an amazing place to DX from.

Hello Paul
MW is almost completely empty here during the daytime, there are no strong locals.
I'm going to install some aerials within the next few days, including for MW.
I brought some SDRs with me.

Looking forward to your logs. What time zone are you? CET?
What sort of static level do you get there, and is 60m still used in the region?

Hello Julian,
Local Time = UTC +2 all year round (There is no Summer Time)
There is quite a lot of static due to thunderstorms, it is the rainy season.
I'll try 60m tonight.
I have just installed a 83cm whip and an FM ring dipole on a metal pole outside (above the roof).
The whip will work for all bands including short wave.
Both aerials work fine on FM.

Regards

Johannesburg and Pretoria on FM at around 300km both seem to be permanent on the 83cm vertical whip using the HF+ Discovery.
Unfortunately a lot of noise from overground power cables on LW/MW/ SW on the whip, but not a problem for FM.

More accurate distance figures for my permanent FM reception on the 83cm whip.

Johannesburg 263km, Pretoria 270 km, Christiana 292km, Schweizer-Reneke 212 km.
There are many more.
