As agreed, I ran a quick A/B test : Roberts Stream 93i vs Sony XDR-P1DBP, tuned to 12A multiplex from La Dole (near Geneve, Switzerland), not that easy to receive from my location because of the terrain.

Alex stated "Sensitivity on the i93 is very impressive", but the tiny Sony is at least as sensitive.
I was unable to compare signal strength objectively because these radios does not use the same scale but assuming there's a single place where this multiplex is audible at home, the test was quite easy to run !

So, if you're looking for a tiny and senstitive DAB/DAB+ radio, go for this Sony ;-)
Thanks Patrick for the test, very interesting. Actually I've just received a Sangean dpr 69. I did a crude test against the 93 and the dpr 69 triumphed. I was picking up three bars with the 69 on 11C and not a thing on the 93. When the 69 was streaming audio with four bars the 93 had one flickering bar. I'm certainly no expert but if anybody wants to dx DAB with a portable using just the whip you won't beat the 69 for sensitivity. It uses a different chipset from its smaller brother the dpr 65 and is available for only £70 on Amazon.

The Sony sounds great for portable dxing as well. Unfortunately after seeing how the 69 outperformed the 93 I have changed my mind on the 93. I'm not sure it's such a good yardstick for sensitive reception afterall.

Alex : Hi ! I How would you rate FM reception (sensitivity / selectivity) of this Sangean ? As mentionned before, the Sony is pretty good for DAB (I would say slightly better than the 93i), but my Tecsun (PL-310 and 380) offer better FM reception. Unfortunately, they don't show RDS and don't offer DAB/DAB+. So, I'm not fully satisfied !

BTW, looking for the DPR69 specs,I found many DPR69+ ; Do you know what the '+' means ?

Patrick:

I am thinking that the DPR69+ is using DAB+ as opposed just DAB but maybe i am not correct ? Here in France DAB/ DAB+ have not really taken off yet with only a couple of large cities using DAB for reception ie : Paris: I have looked on the shelves in the big supermarkets , carrefour , auchan & cora along with specialized outlets fnac & boulanger but for now no DAB can be found. I have a Sony FM /DAB portable with ext ant socket which i fitted and works ok but not as good i am sure than the more expensive equipment. I will be on holiday in the antilles in March and i am thinking for taking along with the fm setup the DAB portable also small band 3 antenne for dx experiment but doubt reception will be received.

Thanks for the prompt reply Pascal. You're probably right about the '+' mention.
About DAB/DAB+ coverage, living near Chambéry (73) I confirm there's not a great deal to be received ... Nothing from Lyon (about 100 km from home), but the 12A MUX from Switzerland is OK due to the high-power transmitter (about 30 kW if I remember well, for sure it helps !).

The 69 is very selective. My local Heart on 102.4 only splutters 100khz either side. This means I can listen to Lincs FM in Norfolk on 102.2. As well as this 102.6 is clear. That is the same as my modified G5. In comparison to the G5 it is slightly less sensitive. This is good though as the G5 is so sensitive I get intermod from Tacolneston on some frequencies. I've not done full FM test as I'm not much of a band 2 dxer. It should be good for SpE though. I don't officially get the radio until Wednesday as it's a birthday present but I'm happy to do a full test measuring it's selectivity and sensitivity against the modded G5 if your interested.

The Dpr 69 only comes in the plus version. I'm not sure what it means but as there is no original non plus version available I wouldn't worry. I got mine from Amazon from a German company called Sotel in black. They offered the cheapest price on the internet.

Here is what a DPR-69 owner just replied to the same question (posted on Youtube) :
<< While DAB reception is really good, the FM reception of this Sangean is, unfortunately, only very average. It's perfectly fine for local and semi-local stations and there are certainly worse radios out there, but I can not really recommend this model for any serious FM DX >>
Looks like the "perfect" radio (I mean fine on both bands) will be tough to find !

About the price, the lowest I found in France is 71.10 euros (including shipping). Note : it's the black unit.

In that case I guess it's not worth your while. It would probably be OK for medium strength SpE signals and it also has RDS but clearly from what that guy said not suitable for weak tropo dx?? I'm guessing the issue with its FM performance is it's sensitivity. Who knows!!

It might be a good idea Patrick and eastangliauk if you did reviews of your portables in the thread "DAB Portables for Dxing" by a2c39a at the top of page 2 in this sub section. He gives a very good run down on the best portables out there and essential features needed. It would be great for newcomers to DAB dxing!

I find DAB works pretty well on the roberts Concerto radio Suffolk mux comes in pretty well though the Blaupunkt BPR-3 is much better on FM plus has DAB+.

I just received another comment about the DPR-69 (vs Sangean ATS 909-X on FM) :
<< I have compared both radio on this location as well in many others. The DPR-69 is much, much weaker on FM and not suitable for FMDxing.
Both sensitivity & selectivity on the DPR-69 are weaker than on a cheap Chinese radio. On DAB manual search option is missing, which is not good either for searching for remote signals >>

In terms of FM you won't beat a modded G5 or DE1103. Sensitivity seems better than any Tecsun from my experience and once modded the G5 and 1103 can equal the Tecsuns on selectivity.

I'm confused about the DAB part of the post. The 69 is extremely sensitive and allows for manual tuning.I'm certainly not championing the 69 for FM dx but I will for DAB. I don't think the person who wrote to you understands what he's saying in regards to DAB dx .

I disagree with that person in regards to FM selectivity at least. It is relatively selective and would probably equal or perhaps better a cheap Chinese radio on FM. I would also question using the 909 as any benchmark when it comes to FM dx. People seem to go round in circles when it comes to portables. As far as DAB goes ive found the Wintal or it's other branding Microspot to be the most sensitive followed by the 69 and then the 65.

I note from this Australian article that the Roberts Play that is mentioned is available for £50 from both Currys and Argos (no affiliation).

The linked, NOT Australian article wrote: No luck on the former but an Australian retailer is exporting the latter. So I purchased one. After a trial by customs which took several days, the radio arrived with me for testing.

Why does he give the prices in Aus Dollars then if he is not Australian, and talks about availability in Australia?
