Simon Beaven - Cardiff - 09/12/2016

Post by simbeav » 12 Dec 2016 15:20

I don't usually get to post logs, but in the light of my previous post about not seeing a future DXing with the horrendous noise that I have to suffer now at my QTH, I thought I would offer encouragement to anybody who encounters a similar situation.

The noise is still there. At times it takes over some frequencies and can be as bad as a chainsaw like buzzing. But, perhaps I am lucky, it is not permenant on a particular frequency, it seems to move around and vary in intenstity, so on a good day like 9th December I can still pull stuff in.

This is my log for 09/12/206, JUST showing personal firsts.

04:58 - 1280khz - WPKZ Fitchburg, MA - mixing with other stations, but clear ID at 04:58:27 and NFL reports after the hour.
05:00 - 1270khz - WDLA Walton, NY - "AM 1270 WDLA WAlton" clear in silence between dominant ESPN announcements.
05:00 - 1300khz - WGDJ Rensselaer, NY - Lots of splatter, but "WGDJ Rensselaer" ID heard on the hour
05:00 - 1480khz - WZRC New York/Ridgefield Park [NJ], NY - "WZRC 1480 AM New York" ID at TOH coming out of mush of other stations.
05:00 - 1570khz - WMVX Lawrence, MA - "Nossa Radio" Jingle just before toh. Lots of Portuguese talk.
05:00 - 1570khz - WABL Amite, LA - YL ID "You're listening to WABL 1570 AM" between Nossa Radio peaks.
18:28 - 1278khz - Radio Kermanshah Iran - OM tk, music , ID and 18:30 before swamped by Pulse 2.

So. DX'ing is still possible. Long may it last, and a a few more days like 9th, please.

Simon

Simon,

Thanks for the info. Great to see so many PFs for you.

I checked my recordings and found a positive ID for WMVX on 1570 khz, a new one for me.

Some decent signals coming in already tonight.

Thanks Rob - Well done on the WMVX.

I use a Wellbrook as you do. With lack of space (and being totally inept at even the most basic antenna building) it has been invaluable. When I came back to DXing a few years ago I dug out my old homemade loop from the 70's and was so disappointed with the noise I was picking up. The wellbrook reduced the noise enough for me to get back i to MW DX,

Simon

Simon,

Yes, I've found that the Wellbrook will null out almost 100% of the noise here and, luckily, when it's pointing towards North America.

I have also returned to MW DXing after a long break (since the early 1980's). I had a homemade loop built in 1977, though that was scrapped in the eighties due to lack of time to keep the hobby going.

Since buying the Wellbrook in June I've identified about 25 new North American stations and heard lots more new ones with no clear ID.

Hope you've got your recordings set for tonight as it's looking good!
