Re: Quadrantids 2017

The polarisation is rapidly changing during MS so a non-polarised aerial is preferable if you have one - and you do have one in the circular omnidirectional antenna. However you should use it with the axis through the loop looking towards the meteors, in other words you should look at the sky throug...

Re: New good DAB+ portable for DAB & FM DX?

Looks nice, but you will soon find out if it is practical to run it off batteries. With luck it will run on rechargeables, but many won't. Having a few spare moments over Christmas I started a webspace for DAB radios, so it would be nice if you or anyone else would contribute some more models to the...

Re: Allouis 162 QRT

I have read that the carrier is scheduled to remain on for another year, because many services in Freance rely on the time code which it carries using phase shift keying

Allouis 162 QRT

Very sad for all the old-timers who have listened to France Inter, and before that, Paris Inter, on long waves for decades now.
Service closed at minuit, blank carrier still there as I write

Re: DRM on 1071kHz last night (France?)

I guess you're the nearest to it if it's in Finisterre, Stuart. Is it a continuous transmission or has it been on and off?
Odd they miss the 't' out of SMARCAST
I'll take the loop to the middle of a field tomorrow, see if I can confirm a due-South bearing

Re: DRM on 1071kHz last night (France?)

AIUI Smartcast is testing on 6170/6175
http://alokeshgupta.blogspot.co.uk/2016 ... tests.html

1071 is on now, lower level than before but the bearing is not so much N-S, more NE-SW, same bearing as Moorside Edge!

Re: DRM on 1071kHz last night (France?)

I doubt it would be France, it was quite strong this morning though less strong than last night.
I was trying to take an accurate bearing with the loop when it went off about 9:30 leaving Clipstone clear, but a domestic portable had shown it to be roughly N-S from here
Will check throughout the day

Re: Tropo 26/11/2016 Ireland/UK

Great that you could take advantage of the E-W lift today John. Some surprises considering the direction, in particular Preston with 100W on 106.5 (that should be The Bee) From here the enhancement has been quite narrowly to the west, with Three Rock ridiculously strong on some of its channels while...

Tesco RAD113B

I had heard that this £9 portable LW/MW/FM radio had unusual properties including unusually good quality listening on R4 LW so I rushed out to buy one. At this ridiculously low price I wasn't expecting much and it is certainly not a dx machine, but it is remarkable value and an unusually good kitche...

Re: How good are LED light bulbs? - my experiences

The trend now is for LED bulbs not to use a switching inverter but just to use a capacitor in series with the series diodes, so no RFI will be generated I recently noticed that Screwfix have 14W GLS LED bulbs for £4.99 in cool or warm white, and I bought a set to replace the CFLs in the pendants at ...
