Re: What happened to the Geminids and Ursids??

This reminds me of a good Quadrantids peak a few years ago. The weeks which followed also produced a lot of excellent MS.

Definitely something else going on here.

Re: Tropo on Christmas day?

Tim, just see how things are on the day. It looks like the tropo will change direction as it moves over us.

Re: Tropo on Christmas day?

I was expecting to have a very quiet few days over the festive season playing radio and catching up with old Es files. In less than 24 hours I now find myself being invited to Christmas dinner three days running! I wonder if I dare look for excuses to get back home early if conditions get good. A tr...

Re: What happened to the Geminids and Ursids??

Good grief! 87.5 to 93.0??? Ouch!

There's definitely something more going on in addition to plain old meteor scatter.

The same could be said for aircraft scatter. Why is it better some days than others? The planes are still in the sky.

It's back, loud and clear this evening. Fading in at 13:00. (Wwhen the flag was aimed at 030 degrees). Peaking fair at 1900. (With the flag at 330 degrees!)

Re: What happened to the Geminids and Ursids??

As you know, I am a big fan of meteor scatter DXing on band 2. I have concentrated on the peaks of many of the major showers over the last two years. But any DX has been brief or non-existent. It's been like a gradual decline, shower by shower. It's got to the point now where I just don't bother. I ...

Re: Japanese Music Box 747 & 774

Very disappointing on the Japanese front this afternoon. 612 was the best frequency with time signal and barely detectable NHK ID at 17:00. South Korea was better though with 1134 coming in particularly well at 16:00.

Probably a closer analysis later, but I am not expecting much.

Re: Japanese Music Box 747 & 774

Closer study of those time signals is probably a good idea. I need some better SDR files of Asiatic reception. I lost the ones I had due to yet another hard drive failure, so any knowledge of downloads there would be appreciated. Without looking, I can't remember if we have any good Asiatic SDR file...

Re: Japanese Music Box 747 & 774

I can only make a guess based on recent observations and the solar wind. A moderate solar wind / unsettled A/K indices seem to favour the furthest reaches of Asia. Super-quiet conditions favour west coast North America/Alaska, although Alaska has its own rules and can sometimes be heard during very ...

Re: Japanese Music Box 747 & 774

The Japanese national anthem was played right before music box jingle. Fade-in occurred midway through the national anthem and so I didn't catch the ID, but the jingle could be heard clearly on several frequencies. It knows how to penetrate through the noise. If only this kind of thing was carried o...

Re: Japanese Music Box 747 & 774

Hearing the Japanese music box underneath 5 Live will go down as one of my most memorable catches ever! It's a struggle, but it's there. Not sure about 1017.

Have to drop my friend home shortly, so I will be able to check more thoroughly and make loggings after 9pm.

I don't wish to pour cold water over this, but Lenny is forecasting less tropo. I wonder who will be the closest? Maybe they are both underestimating it. Time will tell.

Re: Japanese Music Box 747 & 774

I have checked my recording from 15:40 - 15:44 and gone up the band. I hear the same music box on several other frequencies. So I have bagged quite a few personal Japanese firsts today! I cannot do too much listening and logging at the moment as I have a friend with me until later. Yes, I have a fri...

Japanese Music Box 747 & 774

Both clearly audible at 15:41.

A good Asian afternoon in prospect.

Good DX!

Re: A Good Chinese Evening

I suppose that is because the Asian propagation is extending west into the UK. The same thing happens here with continental tropo. If the tropo does not extend inland, I have a clear band for continental DX. I know when people in the Midlands have continental tropo, as the Midlands tries to block th...

Re: A Good Chinese Evening

RTI Kouhu was belting in on 1098 yesterday at 1700 too. I am hoping for a decent repeat today as the conditions still look god for Asia. Be prepared!
