FMList.org not responding

Is anyone able to get onto FMList - at 0922 GMT I get a timeout message that the connection took too long?

Re: How does a SDR radio actually work?

I should add another short post as the SDRPlay RSP1A wih a mixer/oscillator is just one form of SDR architecture. The other form is where you connect an antenna "directly" to the ADC chip. [I am now 'borrowing' info from the 2008 RSGB handbook]. The frequency coverage is roughly half the clock speed...

Re: How does a SDR radio actually work?

I don't think anyone will be brave enought to answer this - certainly not me! I can roughly explain the easy bit. Try this link as a start https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software-defined_radio It should explain the concepts nicely - the RSP1A does indeed have the RF amp, mixer, oscillator, and IF amp...

Re: Ursids 2020 possible outbursts

There were no spectacular outburst but from 2am to 6am ativity continued at a rate of 20-30 per hour and I managed a fair number of stations.
Compared to the Quarantids the distance was greater with just one station under 900 km.

Not so far - but I've still got from 3 am to 9 am to process - but have had some priority stuff to deal with.

Re: Ursids 2020 possible outbursts

I'm working my way through the I/Q files and for the period midnignt to 2 am there was quite a bit of activity. There were six short bursts of up to 20 seconds that gave RDS and others that were either not so intense or the signals were choppy, plus pings in-between. At a rough estimate, for a perio...

Re: Ursids 2020 possible outbursts

Looking at the Virgo program the Ursids are circumpolar and very high up. Which if I read it correctly means that the antenna needs to be pointed due East +/- 20 degrees or so depending on the time of day - so a 5 ele aerial pointed due east should catch everything. I shall set up recording overnigh...

Re: Geminids 2020 - some highlights

Thanks for sharing the video and map. This is very interesting. The Russian stations at under 450 km are forward scatter this would be from a high angle - between 20 and 30 degrees depending on the height of the ionisation. Then the path-length for the Polish station to be received by back-scatter w...

Re: Geminids 2020 - some highlights

Why is the meteor trail line drawn exactly there in the diagram The diagram is to illustrate what back-scatter is - it is not the actual patch of the meteor. It is a guess as my antenna was pointing at 65 degrees (fixed) and most meteor scatter signals were coming from 40 - 50 degrees at the time. ...

Re: Geminids 2020 - some highlights

"Back-scatter" Hi Rolands, Thanks for the question - I have drawn a diagram to show the mechanisnm of back-scatter (map source: google). Back-scatter propagation.jpg Here is a link to The American Meteor Society which mentions back-scatter and forward-scatter (which we usually get). https://www.amsm...

Geminids 2020 - some highlights

A general observation from the logs so far and similar to the Pereids reception is that compared to Es the distance received is much shorter - 800-1400 km with a handful of stations closer and farther away. Es tends to be 1200-1800 km. Shortest distances 14/12 88.9 MHz 432 km R. Leuteberg LUX 13/12 ...

Why didn't I think of this before?

It must be at least 5 years since I added a second monitor to my system. So why has it taken me until now to realise I can do this with SDR# when playing back my recordings? Extended display.jpg And yes - you can see two instances of RDSSpy - running in parallel to improve the chances of capturing w...

Re: New SDR Console version 3.0.26: MPX Output.

There is something very unusual a quirky about RDS software. I agree that it doesn't seem to make sense. As another example I've found RDSSpy struggles with RDS from Algerian quite often in the 2019 season SDRSharp's in-built decoder would throw up the RDS quickly and RDSSpy gave nothing. Most us h...

Re: New SDR Console version 3.0.26: MPX Output.

I first got RDS from Araz FM when there wasn't really anything audible. It must have been confusing when you first went through your IQ file back in June. The confusing bit was C201 - which I was expecting to be HRT-HR 1. But I didn't pick it up first thru the I/Q file, but from my unattending logg...

John,
In the window that pops up with Open - try clicking on the "reload" button - that should populate the window with your drives/folders. Then find where you saved the links to.

Re: New SDR Console version 3.0.26: MPX Output.

Hi Peter, PI 0951 and PS AVTO is from Georgia, C201 Araz FM is from Azerbaijan. The bit that realy amuses me about the audio from Azarbaijan is where in the middle of the yl speaking you hear the english phrase "normal hair" - obviously an advert. Also did you note how strong the RDS signal was comp...

Re: New SDR Console version 3.0.26: MPX Output.

That's brilliant - you ended up with the full RDS on RDSpy. Avtoradio must be putting a lot of power into the sub-carrier as the audio is very weak.

Re: New SDR Console version 3.0.26: MPX Output.

I tried a comparison between RDS Spy and RDS Console's RDS decoders. RDS Spy won, but only just. One could spend ages on various signals - the two I/Q files will also allow a comparison - and on my set up the one on 95.1 MHz sometimes has SDRC pop up the code, and sometimes RDSSpy! In fact, in my o...
