The Joy of a New Computer

When I bought my first PC around 1987- powered by a 2086?processor - it came with a thick book. The next PC was a 286 and still had all the info about the computer. As each computer arrived the books got smaller and smaller. My brand-new purchase had a very small slip of paper in it - with 'idiot' p...

Re: Elad FDM-S2 Vs Sony XDR-F1HD - Initial Comparison

Regarding the need for 192kHz soundcard - having got my self in a tailspin previously I think I can now offer some advice. If your integrated soundcard is "HD audio" it supports 192kHz input /192kHz output. You need to click on the audio manager and find everything that has a drop-down allowing you ...

Re: Radio Mana Mana 90.9MHz

Early morning of Thurs 19th Dec I got two separate bursts of PI:50F8 on 90.9 this time with PS:MUSIC - but nowhere to log it on FMList

Croatia HRT-HR 1 on 90.7 and 90.9MHz?

During the Geminds on 13th December I have received a number bursts from HRT-HR1 on both 90.7 and 90.9 MHz with PI and PS and more with just the pi code. But HRT-HR1 is not listed on either of these frequencies. Before I assume that they have all come from the 15kw station at Kalnik on 90.8MHZ and w...

Re: Geminids

There was a lot of activity in the early evening of the 14th. I recorded 50 minutes from 20:00 berween 88.1 and 89.1 and there were some very nice bursts with ine at around 20:15 showing up on every frequency from 88.2 to 89.0 with the strongst signal on 88.8 in (I'm convinced) Swedish. Particularly...

Re: Geminids

Hi John,

that should have been "block of spectrum" - must have had vowel problems but can't see why *black* in the context would be flagged up. As we are discussing the constellation Gemini I wonder if the filter will react to Pollux (one of the Gemini twins) :D

Frequency Selective fading example

Whilst watching the HDSDR waterfall I was intrigued by the 'weird and wonderful' patterns appearing on the weak signals visible. By accident I had got the contrast range set so the background noise was black and any hint of signal would appear as blue. I've attached a screenshot and highlight the ar...

Hi John, Interesting reception of Blaenpwyf and Weymouth. Last year during the Geminids I received the phrase "a commonly known item" (in British English) at 0740 on 14th on 87.7. The only logical transmitter being it was BFBS from Maastrict - at 347km. I concluded that this was an instance of back ...

Re: Geminids

The Gemini constellation rises in the East around 6pm and sets around 9am. So any day time reception I would expect to be random meteors. Not a lot of strong reflections over-night, but during the evening I was noting quite a few audio bursts on 87.8 and the 1MHz spectrum from 87.6 to 88.6 showed th...

Radio Mana Mana 90.9MHz

I recorded a very good MS burst on 90.9MHz - PI:50F8 PS:--NAMANA which I take to be Radio Mana Mana. There is nothing listed for Radio Mana Mana in FM List but Google search throws up radio Mana Mana home page www.radiomanamana.it/ with a bold proclamation that it is on 90.9MHz "a Roma". Previous lo...

Re: What's behind DAB and other digital modes?

IMO - The commercial advantages (to manufacturers, advertisers, government) weigh heavily in the push to adopt digital. Consider this timeline: 1946-1985 405 line TV. 1967-2011 (approx) PAL colour. 2002-2010 - Freeview. 2010 to date - HD Freeview. Also include the introduction of wide-screen TVs and...

Re: Elad FDM-S2 Vs Sony XDR-F1HD - Initial Comparison

Very interesting - especially the recording of Antenna Neidersachsen which wasn't audible down here in the southeast. Must be the long sea path. Sensitivity of the Elad is published as <2uv for 12dB SN ratio at 98MHz. In constrast the Sony ST-SB920 has a sensitivity of 0.9uv for 26dB S/N ratio (mono...

Re: What sort of scatter is this?

I've been browsing the Internet for the last couple of days trying to refresh my memory on troposcatter. Still can't find the path-loss charts that were in the old books - which basically showed that beyond the horizon the path loss flattened out and stayed almost constant for 'hundreds"? of km befo...

Re: Elad FDM-S2 - Some Thoughts & Questions

Hi Simon, The obvious answer is play back the recordings when you aren't home  On the slightly more serious side - it's a case of deciding what you want out of the hobby. For example - with MS reception I've decided I will only concentrate on the peaks of meteor showers and only on RDS Logs. Ot...

Re: What sort of scatter is this?

Hi Nick, I surely regret throwing out my 1969 RSGB handbook and 1974 ARRL VHF Handbook some years ago as they had had extensive chapters on VHF propagation and the current handbooks are so superficial in coverage - so I can only go by memory. But one thing that sticks on memory is the wide variation...

Re: Elad FDM-S2 - Some Thoughts & Questions

Hi Jim, Thanks for the additional comments. Helathwise the nifection came back - another course of anti-biotics and tomorrow (Weds) a visit to hospitsl to have the last bit done and hopefully everything will be fine. I should think a 1.5MHz bandwidth would be more than adequate - so when everything ...

Re: Tropo - Germany/Belgium

Hi John, Yes - very similar to yesterday with strong signals in the 400-500km range generally. Some nice low power stations - and quite a few new catches (easy for me as this is only my 3rd yr dx-ing). "Best" were AFN Powernet from Belgium on 101.7 (900 watts) with full RDS and once again Antenne AC...
